Taking care of clients that entrust their future with you is a responsibility that I take very serious. Every minute and every hour my reputation is on the line. I have 40-50 clients at any given time. I’m literally available to them on a 24/7 basis. Yes, I do get the occasional 2:30AM call or text. I answer swiftly and always in a positive and decisive manner.

Every day I write each client’s name on a legal pad in order of my memory. Then I visualize each of them, one at a time, successfully reaching their visions and goals with my S.C.O.R.E. Success System. Every day I see their success. Since 1974, I have never missed a daily opportunity to send out the positive vibe…not one!

The clients that are at the bottom of the list receive a call or text immediately. With 6500-7000 minutes per month on the phone, I am holding my clients accountable and helping them make adjustments to life’s challenges.

Life is exciting! I've been around the world dozens of times. I've spoken to crowds from 50 to 15,000. I’ve addressed students in Puerto Rico, tribesmen from Sri Lanka and capitalists from the Fortune 500. Audiences have been everywhere from the jungles of Thailand, the ghettos of India, mountains of Tibet, the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa to the GM Center in Vancouver.

I've attended 35 Masters and a zillion MLB games with three World Series and several All-Star games under my belt. The Super Bowl, Wimbledon, French Open, Australian Open, US Open (golf & tennis). Daytona, Talladega, Indy 500, NBA Finals, Pro Bowl, Final Four, Kentucky Derby and the World Cup have long ago been marked off my bucket list. I’ve even been to the Little League and College World Series. It’s been an awesome 38 years!

And I’m still going as strong as ever…loving what I do. Each day is different. Each day is challenging in a positive way. I daily coach anywhere from 20-35 clients. They range from a macro economist in London, a PR mogul in Sidney, a screenwriter in Hollywood, several Nationwide, PGA and LPGA golfers, many pro baseball players, an NFL QB, an NBA point guard, 3 Division I head coaches, amateur athletes from 4 sports, a doctor and dentist in Illinois, 4 businessmen, a managing director of a major bank, a CPA in Puerto Rico, a car dealership, a couple that was considering divorce and a homemaker with five children that outworks all of the above. The challenges come in all sizes and degrees of complexity. Each client knows and understands my S.C.O.R.E.^® Success System. Our daily communications revolve around this thought management program. All are active members of the Champions Club™ where I'm aware of their visions and goals. “24/7 access to me” is my motto and they’re all respectful of my time.

In addition, I'm writing a new book, updating the Champions Club™, hosting my weekly Golf in the Zone Show and managing my awesome team of peak performers at Jim Fannin Brands. Is their time for me? Of course. I walk two miles in the woods every day and spend great quality time with my family. With S.C.O.R.E.^® as my personal guide, there is plenty of time to be fully engaged in the moment. Life is good!

Best of all I have a loving wife who supports me and is always by my side. She is my rock. Two amazing daughters make me so proud every day. They are inspirations. My friends have been with me for decades and we look forward to seeing each other often. This circle of spirited people keeps me grounded.

And this September 17th in Ashland, KY, I am privileged to be the keynote speaker for honoring my mentor, Professor R.W. Ross. He was recently inducted posthumously into the Kentucky Tennis Hall of Fame. The “Prof” would be 123 years old this year.

Rookie to Hall of Fame: Coaching Frank Thomas

I have coached some great athletes in my lifetime. They have come in all sizes, shapes, nationalities, color and economic backgrounds. There are only a handful that really standout among the 400+ professionals that have received my S.C.O.R.E.^® Success System.

Frank Thomas is one of those special talents.

For 19 years Frank and I talked about “hitting the ball solid.” We discussed everything from parenting, women, media, wellness, food and of course baseball.

His achievement has been Hall of Fame material. He had a lifetime .301 batting average, 521 HRs and 1,704 RBIs. He is a five-time American League All-star who won two American League MVP awards and finished in the top 10 seven other times.

However, winning the batting title in 1997 was his greatest pride and joy. His whopping .347 batting average was even more remarkable because his lack of speed meant he received few, if any, infield hits. He may be forever the biggest man to ever win a batting title!

Frank Thomas was driven to be great. His concentration at the plate was amazing. Opposing pitchers could feel his energy as he stood in a purposeful calm. His patience was legendary. He could wait all day for the mistake that each pitcher feared would happen. When it did, Frank seldom missed making them pay. At 6’5” tall and weighing 260 pounds, his confidence was even bigger than his massive size.

On July 31, 2011 the Frank Thomas bronze statue was erected on the left field concourse in Cellular Field in Chicago, IL. He deserved it. It was here, as the greatest Chicago White Sox player ever, that he honed his craft.

“Hall of Fame is the next step” I just texted. He replied, “I’ve got my fingers crossed.” “No Frank…. Can’t miss. I can see it so!”

The Great Storm

What happens when you invite three priests to dinner? There are three priests, a significant other, her female best friends, a co-worker, three bottles of wine and a great dinner all under one roof. What an interesting, profound evening.

After the food was blessed, it became apparent that all at the table had one thing in common…faith. Although the room was made up of people from different religious backgrounds, it still remained the common bond with spirituality. The priests told stories about their trip to Jerusalem. They told how they entered the priesthood. They even shared the political workings of the Catholic Church. Every person at the table gave insight into what they were all about. We laughed and had a most eclectic evening. And then it happened…

As swift as a ball falling off of a table to the floor, a storm appeared. As the clouds grew angry and dark, the thunder and lightning played a symphony of chaos. Lights started to go out in the neighborhood. Traffic lights stopped working. Businesses closed down. But not in my house…

The lights merely flickered. It was as if God said, “There’s three priests in there…I’ll leave the house alone.” And just like that, the storm went away. The damage was done in the neighborhood, but not here. Although I am not Catholic, I gained more insight into my spirituality. These three priests were young, handsome and wearing the collar of their faith. They were funny (Father Jayson even did a Run DMC rap called “You Be Illin’.” I wish it was on Youtube…it would have gone viral. I didn’t see that one coming!). All were intelligent, great listeners and amazing storytellers.

You’re in good hands with Allstate…wrong! You’re much more safe and secure with three priests at your dining room table.

College Baseball World Series

Infielder Cody Dent (son of former Major Leaguer Bucky Dent) of the Florida Gators baseball team went 2-2 with 2 walks to help his team advance to the 2011 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. The Gators play South Carolina this Monday for the College World Series Championship in Omaha. It will be aired live on ESPN HD.

It's so great to see Cody reach the pinnacle of college baseball. He has been a hard worker and a great S.C.O.R.E. System student. Good luck and stay in the Zone!

Rankin Rising!

Yesterday I had the privilege to attend Bo Jackson’s Give Me a Chance Foundation’s Charity Event at Capri Restaurant in Burr Ridge, Illinois. It was definitely a star-studded evening. I got to hang out with an old friend, Eric Soderholm, former Yankee and Chicago White Sox player. I had a great chat with Bo Jackson and met former Yankee pitcher Tanyon Sturtze, great linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens Ray Lewis, former MLB pitcher Jeff Weaver and former Chicago Bear’s player James “Big Cat” Williams. It was a great evening in support of a greater cause. This event was the kick-off for the third annual Bo Jackson Celebrity Golf Classic held today, Friday June 24, 2011 at Old Oaks Country Club in Homer Glen, Illinois. The golf outing will benefit his Give Me A Chance Foundation, which is dedicated to guiding disadvantaged youth towards personal and professional growth. The foundation’s programs have positively impacted the lives of hundreds of disadvantaged children through time, understanding and guidance these children have never had the chance to receive. Guests of the Bo Jackson Celebrity Golf Classic will have the opportunity to mingle, dine or golf with the likes of Bo Jackson, Jim McMahon, Richard Dent, Stan Makita and many more stars. The foundation has a number of Fortune 500 sponsors for this event including Nike, Mercedes Benz, Navistar, Best Buy, BMW, FedEx, Subway and many more top corporations. It will no doubt be an awesome event!

Memorial Day

Today, we honor those that fought our battles in foreign lands against warring strangers. They fought for our ability to walk down our streets at night without fear. They fought for our opportunity to be whatever we want to be. They fought for our freedom of choice in a myriad of ways. Be proud to be an American today. Place the flag on your doorstep.

From Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan, I have seen generations sacrifice for my democracy. Thank you. I appreciate you. I honor you. I remember you. God bless you. God Bless America.

Ibanez is Getting Back Into the Swing of Things

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder, Raul Ibanez, was mired in a 0-35 slump until he reached out to his old coach from a decade ago. Since reuniting with Jim Fannin, Ibanez has been in the Zone. In his last 22 at bats, he has 10 hits with 3 doubles, 2 HR and 5 RBI. His batting average with the S.C.O.R.E.® Success System tucked under his arm is a whopping .455!

Many pundits and insiders have stated that Ibanez is washed up at age 38. Philadelphia writers and fans have been openly negative. “I don’t see it. In fact, as a student, he’s absorbing information as fast as anyone I’ve coached. He is a quick study. He is playing at an all-star caliber pace at the moment. He turned himself around in less than 24 hours,” says Jim Fannin.

Ibanez states, “I’m seeing the ball great. The game has been slowed down. My new mental routines definitely help. Baseball is a lot more fun.”

Activities at the Derby

This past weekend at the Kentucky Derby, I had brunch with Tubby Smith (University of Minnesota men’s basketball coach), Mike Brey (University of Notre Dame men’s basketball coach) and their wives. It was funny to listen to the back-story of their season and their coaching. These are really awesome guys that care about their players. It was very refreshing.

I walked the red carpet at the Celebrity Ball called The Julep Ball benefitting the James Graham Brown Cancer Center. Guests at my table were Tubby Smith, Mike Brey and the jockey riding Dialed-In, Julien Leparoux. I got to hang out with Cedric the Entertainer, Warren Moon, Reggie Bush and too many other celebrities to mention. It was a great benefit. Everyone looked awesome black ties and ball gowns.

The 2011 Derby Festival Classic High School All-American Basketball Game was awesome! I not only spoke to the best, young athletes in America last Friday morning but I got to rekindle a long-time relationship.

Every one of the All-Americans who heard me talk about “Thinking Like a Champion” was inquisitive, appreciative and open minded. I spoke with most of them personally throughout the remainder of the day.

Last Thursday night was the skills competition with the 3-point shot, 2-on-2 tournaments and the dunk contest being the highlights. It was phenomenal watching the talent of these high school athletes. All of them will be in the starting line-up as freshman for the best college basketball programs such as Connecticut, Kentucky, Louisville, Duke and Indiana to name a few.

The skills event was held at Bellarmine College, home of the 2011 Division II National Champions. I had dinner with their head basketball coach and 2011 NCAA Coach of the Year, Scotty Davenport. What a great guy he is!

Junior Bridgeman, Louisville’s all-time great player and former NBA star was also a guest speaker. He discussed with the players the trials and tribulations of being a celebrity athlete. He recalled one of his famous NBA teammates being set-up with a young girl after one of their games. Later, the supposed girl’s father confronted him and said she was only 16. The NBA player could pay $500K to keep it quiet or the father would go to the authorities, NBA and the press. The NBA player paid the check. Later he found that he had been scammed by a woman of age and her devious friend who portrayed the father. Two other NBA stars fell for the same scam.

It was also great to meet up with my childhood friend, Dan Owens, who has recruited for this event for 25 years. As best friends since the 3rd grade, I watched Dan grow this amazing event for over two decades. He has recruited some of the greats of the game. Names like Shaquille O’Neil, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Chris Bosh have all attended.

The Derby Classic has been Dan Owens’ passion. Every basketball coach in the country has at one time or another spoken with him about this prestigious event. What a great job he has performed.

Carlos Delgado Retires as One of My Favorites

Veteran baseball slugger, Carlos Delgado, announced his retirement this week in San Juan, Puerto Rico, saying he was unable to work his way back to the majors after years of being hampered by injuries.

Carlos was one of my all-time favorite clients. He was the consummate professional. He was always well prepared. He gave 100% on every play. He never complained. And most of all, he was and still is the most humble man I’ve ever met.

Watching him perform was exciting. Attending his wedding was memorable. Vacationing in the Dominican with him was spectacular. Seeing his family grow with a beautiful wife and children has been inspiring.

We have worked by phone or in person every day during baseball season for the past 10 years. It was an honor to coach one of baseball's most productive hitters. He retired with 473 career home runs and ownership of several Toronto Blue Jays all-time offensive records.

I remember the night Carlos hit four home runs in one game. It was September 25, 2003 against Tampa Bay. Typically he would get alone before the game, close his eyes and meditate. But this night Carlos didn’t feel very well. He fell asleep. In fact, a clubhouse attendant had to come wake him just before the 1^st inning. That night he later told me, “The ball was coming in slow motion. I had a purposeful calm feeling that I would hit solid every at bat. It was a magical night.”

Fifteen men have hit four home runs in one game. I have coached two of them (Mike Cameron was the other). Delgado’s night was an epic Zone performance.

Now this humble giant of a man must retire. "I always said I would try to return until my body had enough. And my body could take no more," the 38-year-old Delgado said Wednesday. "I've been training two years and recently tried yet again to increase the routine of work, but the swing was not there to compete at the level I want," he added.

"There comes a moment when you have to have the dignity and the sense to recognize that something is not functioning," he said. "You can't swim against the current. And this coming from a man who had nine operations," he said. "It is a sad moment as a human being and athlete that some of your abilities aren't what they once were."

Carlos Delgado won the Hank Aaron Award in 2000 and the Silver Slugger Award in 1999, 2000 and 2003. He hit 30-plus home runs 11 times and cracked the 40-homer plateau three times. He was an All-Star in 2000 and 2003.

In 2006 Carlos won the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award, given to the major league player who best combines community service with excellence on the field. This may have been his greatest honor.

He will be missed in Major League Baseball. And I’ll miss calling in my tactics for his daily match-ups against the opposition’s pitcher. However, Carlos Delgado was more than a great baseball player. He was and still is a great man.

Be Bold!

Good fortune favors the bold. It takes a courageous heart to take the risk when the move lacks the statistician’s percentage of success. Courage launches surprise on the unsuspecting foe. It neutralizes the strong. It crushes the meek. It appears swiftly with the accuracy of an Olympic archer. I’ve seen daring performers demoralize a home crowd and send an army of supporters into hiding. Courage in the face of adversity is a quality that the champion possesses and most performers surely lack.

The Master

A master is extraordinary. This person is unique. This is a rare artist, performer or player of consummate skill. This individual is an expert at their craft. Typically, it’s a person of the past whose work serves as a model or ideal.

Who is a master? Think of Jimi Hendrix as he magically stroked his guitar. He felt the music as it exploded through his fingers to mesmerized audiences. The great guitarists that followed all dreamed of Jimi’s riffs.

Think of painters Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso or Jackson Pollock. They permeate our visual senses with the delicate touch of their artist’s stroke. When I helped launch the famous South Beach artist Romero Britto, it was Picasso that he emulated.

Emily Dickinson was a master of the English word. Her poetry stands the test of time as it invokes feelings of our own mortality. She has been recognized as one of the world’s top 50 most influential women.

Ansel Adams captured the beauty of the American West with his amazing black and white photographs. One glance at his scenes of Yosemite National Park and you immediately think his name. Generations of photographers have tried in vain to capture his magic.

And remember Fred Astaire? How he graced the stage! He was a virtuoso dancer whose career spanned 78 years. He had technical control and an astonishing sense of rhythm. Rudolf Nureyev, Sammy Davis, Jr., Michael Jackson, Gregory Hines, Mikhail Baryshnikov all felt his influence. He made us all want to dance.

These are truly Masters.

This week the Masters Tournament will be played. The best of the best golfers will arrive. Less than 100 men from around the globe will gather to test their craft in the tiny Georgia town of Augusta. One will be declared the Masters champion. Each contestant will leave Washington Road and turn onto Magnolia Lane to the world’s greatest golf tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club. This memorable lane is 330 yards long and is adorned by 61 beautiful magnolia trees. For 35 years I’ve traveled up this picturesque driveway. I know it well. Through this entrance the players will approach a 365-acre compound that encases the 18-hole course. This will be the player’s canvas where they will attempt to paint a masterpiece.

But will the champion be a master?

The victor will place a white ball into 18 cups with the least amount of shots or strokes. The 7,435-yard course is spectacular with more than 80,000 plants of more than 350 varieties that adorn the Augusta National grounds. But don’t let the beauty fool you. Only a masterful performance on the treacherous and demanding course will wear the “Green Jacket” as the symbol of his mastery.

The first winner of the Masters was Horton Smith in 1934. He repeated his win in 1936. The current champion, winning in 2010, is Phil Mickelson. Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods have each won four, and Jimmy Demaret, Gary Player, Sam Snead, Nick Faldo and Phil Mickelson have three titles to their name. Other notable winners include Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Tom Watson, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Ben Crenshaw and José Mariá Olazábal, who have all won the Masters twice.

Each could be considered masters of their craft. But are they truly a master?

Trevor Immelman, Zach Johnson, Mike Weir, Vijay Singh and Angel Cabrera all won here. They slipped on the Green Jacket. However, these one-hit wonders are not masters. In fact, there is only one master. Tiger, Phil, Gary and Arnie definitely are to be considered. But for my money there is only one that I would place next to Hendrix, Picasso, Dali, Jackson, Adams, Dickinson and Astaire.

Yes, it’s Jack. It has to be Jack Nicklaus who won the Masters six times between 1963 and 1986. His 18 Major victories and his 73 official Tour wins have him standing alone. When the moment of truth arrives the master works his craft. I watched him win in 1986.

I coached PGA Tour rookie, John Cook in 1980. John’s playing partner this particular day was Jack Nicklaus. The 2-iron was not friendly to Jack. I watched him butcher two of them during the round. Upon finishing Cook and I went to the range to work. Jack later came to the range, plopped his bag down and proceeded to pull out his 2-iron. We watched in stunned silence as Nicklaus hit the 2-iron as pure as possible. It was majestic. One swing. Only one! He then placed his club back in the bag and left. He never said a word. The master appeared and then was gone in a matter of seconds. Witnessing this one practice shot was like watching a starving man eat just one potato chip. Not possible!

The good believe. The great expect. The master knows.

The memory of the “Golden Bear” still prowls the grounds of Augusta National. He influenced the current stars of today’s game. Tiger and Phil and the other wannabes all chase his legacy.

He was and still is a master for the ages.

Passion: Fire In the Heart

Passion ignites the fire in the heart. It’s the torch that lights a darkened path. It’s the beacon for the downtrodden, lost and the exhausted. I’ve watched a performer throw up while practicing alone. As I watched him wretch after a grueling session, he smiled a wicked smile and began to laugh. I asked why he was laughing. He replied, “I can’t wait to make my opponent pay for how badly I feel.” The best love to train. They love to push themselves to the limit. They thoroughly enjoy the art of their craft whatever it may be. Their passion fuels the journey.

Perseverance

· Perseverance keeps the heart beating strong. It’s the inner voice in your ear that says “keep moving” while the voice of reason says “quit.” It sets the alarm clock that wakes you up every morning to train while the opposition sleeps. It orchestrates the music of success in your mind as you fall exhausted in bed. Perseverance replays the will to win when losing stares the normal in the eye.

Hunger keeps you hunting. In fact, lions don’t hunt when their bellies are full. However, the heart of the champion keeps an insatiable appetite for victory regardless of the condition, circumstance or situation. Whether this warrior is winning or losing, the hunger for excellence fuels the mind and body for success. When the money is on the table and the next move that is made can and will decide the outcome, it is here that the heart of a champion leaps over the impossible and picks up the money.

Hope Is On the Way

Can you imagine being alone, hungry and cold in the dark? You have no home. There is no electricity. No food. Little water. Your loved ones are missing. Your future seems bleak at best. You are reminded constantly that your nightmare may happen again.

Can you imagine having a recurring nightmare that plays out in your mind by the hour and sometimes minute? The nightmare always has the same ending. Panic. Despair. Loneliness. Anguish. Loss. Pain.

This human scenario is being played out in the minds of the victims from Japan, Haiti, New Zealand, New Orleans, Afghanistan, Iraq and other troubled spots globally.

As we watch in horror the devastation from Northeast Japan, the pictures on the screen cannot convey the human tragedy. Yes...this portion of Japan will be rebuilt. Haiti will survive the material loss. Jazz will come alive again in the souls of Louisiana. It is the psychological trauma, however, that will linger for months, years and lifetimes. How do they cope? How would you cope if your life was ripped from you in an instant?

At some point, once the grieving process is over, the human spirit will take flight and bring hope and belief to the hearts of the downtrodden. The human spirit is resilient. It can and will rebound from this tragedy.

It is times like this when you should look at your own life. See what you have. Take stock of your blessings. Hold your loved ones a little tighter. Whisper you love them an extra time. Wash away the pettiness in your relationships. Kick the 90-Second Rule up a notch. Fix a permanent smile on your face. Let it brighten the day of everyone you meet. Take nothing for granted.

These Ladies Can Play

Girls Basketball is BIG. In fact, over 8,000,000 fans attended NCAA women’s basketball games last year. Perennial top teams Tennessee and Connecticut both had average attendances of 10,000+ fans. The quality of play has dramatically improved with speed, agility, technique, strength and height at all time highs.

With March Madness just days away, millions of fans around the country will get crazy for their home team. I have a new respect for women’s basketball. They can play.

Will the favorites of Connecticut, Tennessee or Duke cut down the nets in Indianapolis once the dust settles? I like Xavier, Michigan State, DePaul and Houston as my dark-horse candidates. Who knows….Maybe even Ohio State could win the men’s and the women’s in the same year. Either way, it will be fun. I look forward to see who is going to play basketball in the Zone. I’ll be watching.

March Madness

It’s that time of year when the crazies come out. This is not just the Cameron Crazies from Duke. Of course, the Duke University Crazies stand courtside in a 1,200-seat student section and begin cheering their basketball team during warm-ups. Many paint their faces white and blue and wear Duke gear to represent their team. Duke’s Cameron Crazies have earned a reputation of the rowdiest, wittiest and best college basketball fans in the land. They even created the now-famous cheer of “Air-Ball” in 1975 when the opposing team misses everything including the rim, net and backboard.

68 college teams will receive a bid to this year’s 2011 National Championship. 31 colleges will automatically qualify through their conference. 37 teams will receive at-large bids. There are approximately 16 teams on the bubble, where every game is crucial.

Will Duke win back-to-back national championships? They are definitely good enough. Will Ohio State take its #1 ranking in the country all the way to a Final Four victory? This is definitely one of my favorite times of the year. All you bracketologists get ready. Paint your face. Wear your team colors. And I will see all of you at the Big Dance in Houston, Texas.

It’s been a long day. I’ve worked out. I’ve logged hours on my cell phone. I’ve stared at the computer screen until my eyes have crossed. I have a lot on my mind. It’s time to soak my challenges away. Is there anything better than a bath? Nothing…unless you have company, of course.

I’m picturing a tub of hot water, the Jacuzzi jets going at full force. There are four candles surrounding me. I’ve got a half of a glass of cabernet within my reach. I grab a packet of Pepsom Salt^® (available at any Wal-Greens^®) and dump it into the water. Immediately, the experience starts to settle my soul. As I place a warm washcloth over my face, I visualize what I want for my life. I see it as if it is so. I’m relaxed. I’m comfortable. I’m in the Zone.

Do you take a bath? In my seminars since 1974, 95% of the audience says, “no.” We’re a nation who doesn’t have time to take a bath. With our hectic schedules, it is so much easier to hop in the shower and run under the faucet for a minute or two. Then we’re out of there, ready to attack the day.

It’s a proven fact that when your mind is producing alpha-brain waves your sub-conscious mind is fertile for suggestion. This is why visualizing before bedtime has such an impact. A bath, however, has multiple functions:

1. It just plain feels good

2. It helps you get into an alpha-state where visualization makes a difference.

3. It can relieve you of your aches and pains.

I know you want to get in the Zone. I know you want to make a lot of money. And I know you want to play your sport at the highest level. Maybe…just maybe you should consider taking a bath.

Connecting with an Old Friend

It was 1980 and I was travelling the globe with the 22nd ranked tennis player in the world. John Lloyd, Great Britain’s #1 player, and I were travelling the ATP circuit while he chased victory after victory. Being married to Chris Evert, world's #1 women's tennis player, made the challenge even more difficult. But we had a great time and I helped him play at an extremely high level.

The last time I saw John was 15 years ago. Today, we reconnected in Palm Beach and had a lot of stories to conjure up. He looks the same. Tan, fit, handsome and always the English gentleman. Some things never change. After spending 6 years as the Davis Cup Captain for Great Britain and the BBC's stalwart on Wimbledon coverage, John is still at the top of his game. Isn't it fun to reconnect with an old friend?

Double Duty

How tough is it to hold down a full time job while competing on the PGA tour? University of Illinois Golf Coach, Mike Small, knows the difficulty of juggling two separate jobs. If anybody can do this, Mike can do it.

Leading the U of I to two Big Ten Championships is a full time job that takes complete focus. Competing in the highest level of the PGA Tour is equally arduous.

After making the cut at Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico last week, this week is another challenge. Mike will need to change gears from coach to player. He definitely has the talent to flip the switch to on-course competitor. Let's see which hat shows up. Will he be the coach? Or will he be the player?

You're Only as Great as the Week After Greatness

I've used “You’re only as great as the day after greatness” for years. After having a week where you've been in the Zone, matching it becomes a challenge. Most winners on the PGA and LPGA tour do not win back to back. Winning back to back requires emotional and physical endurance. Aaron Baddeley, PGA Tour player, won The Northern Trust Open a few weeks ago. After his victory, he missed the cut in Mexico with one of the weakest fields on the tour. Why is that?

When you are aware of being in the Zone you are no longer in it. After a positive week, everyone tells you how great you were. Everyone talks about the past. The media swarms your locker and talks about what you've done and what you're going to do. This is exactly what did NOT help you win. When you have a great week, you’re fully immersed in the moment. You are surrounded by the "Warrior's Creed"… "I have no future, I have no past, my goal is to make the present last." This mantra is usually shredded after a week of greatness.

Luke Donald wins big. He moves on to the No. 3 ranking in the world. Mat Goggin wins for the first time in 13 years. Friends, family, media and peers have all congratulated them. They have had more publicity, more notoriety than ever before. What's the challenge? You're only as great as the week after greatness. My advice to the boys is to get back in the trench. Sequester yourself in solitude when you're performing in a crowd.

What’s going to happen this week to Mat and Luke? I’m not sure…but I know this: they will do everything they can to stay locked in the moment. Stay tuned.

The Butt of the Joke

Do you know any doctors that are the butt of all jokes? Well, mine is. Here’s the scenario:

Yes…it’s the time of my life where a colonoscopy is in order. How fun! As my physician specialist was preparing to scope his patient…Me, I definitely had thoughts of trepidation. Today was the big day.

The day before was disgusting. After gallons of fluid were forced down my throat, I had a new respect for how animals are force fed for our culinary pleasure. To add to my discomfort, I had to awake at 4:30am to gulp down one last 10 ounces of liquid dynamite just to be sure all is well.

Finally, I lay in fetal position with a backless gown staring into the monitor, which would soon showcase an internal movie of me. Three nurses moved around the room in rapid fashion. I’m not sure what they were doing. The drugs that would soon take me out started to kick in. With the I.V. in my arm while laying on a cold metal table, the speakers attached to the four corners of the room started blasting Creedence Clearwater Revival’s 1970’s hit, “Lookin’ Out My Back Door.”

As the drugs took effect and the familiar refrain echoing into my mind, I broke into song at the top of my lungs in sync with one of my college favorite bands. The nurses burst into hysterical laughter. I then chided the good doctor for his apparent lack of sensitivity for his selection in music. The last thing I remember is that he turned blood red with embarrassment as I drifted off to Creedence and his nursing back-up singers. What were the odds of that song playing on the radio? Timing is everything.

Maybe I was the butt of this joke!

It Takes Courage!

Yes...I choked up after reading this story about courage. In just 10 minutes today, I read about Miguel Cabrera, MLB All-Star for the Detroit Tigers, being arrested for DUI and resisting arrest. Then I read about a 13-year-old boy named Nadin Khoury who fought the bullies that so relentlessly tormented him. And get your Kleenex out for what happened next. Winning Ugly

In order to win an NCAA Championship, you need to fight through one game where your shots don’t fall and the refs seem to be blowing the whistle the other way. You’ve got to win the one game when everything is against you. This is winning ugly.

Last night I watched two teams, Minnesota and Illinois, battle it out on the Gopher’s home court. After tonight, one team would stand above mediocrity. This game had me rooting against an old friend from my Kentucky days, Tubby Smith. Of course, Coach Weber has been under scrutiny for his teams lack of passion, desire and grit on the road. Coach Weber pulled a surprise on his team and sat his starting point guard, McCamey, and center, Tisdale, on the bench. This would be a wake-up call.

As the two veterans watched from the bench, Illinois started out ahead only to lose their 9-point lead just before the first half ended. The Illinois coaching staff has seen this performance before. Finally, with the game on the line, the Fighting Illini did just that. They fought. McCamey showed a desire to win that has not been present in the past 6 games. This group of young men from Illinois willed their team to a victory in the last two minutes.

Congratulations, Illini. You closed like champions. Winning ugly is still winning.

Jim is Hanging Out with Cheerleaders

Although the University of Illinois men’s basketball team lost by one point to Northwestern this past Saturday, it wasn’t for a lack of school spirit by the audience. How many teams have an 11-month old cheerleader who can stay focused the entire game? Not many.

Hanging around cheerleaders is a positive thing. They are always optimistic no matter what the score. This little cheerleader had a smile the entire game. Everyone was amazed at her incredible energy.

The Fighting Illini need to better close out games especially on the road. They’ve been in every game this year. No one has blown them out. Maybe all they need is an 11-month old, pint- sized cheerleader to get them in the Zone.

What a Difference a Day Makes

What a difference a day makes! Monday I was basking on a beach in Hawaii with a drink with an umbrella in it. Tuesday I was hunkered down in a blizzard in Chicago.

Two days later we are slowly digging ourselves out of one of the worst storms in memory. What happened? Where am I?

Lightning, 65 mph winds and 20 inches of snow would be a shock to anyone’s system. But this storm was a true punisher. People trapped in their cars. Abandoned on the road for hours. Lakeshore Drive, next to frozen Lake Michigan, was shut down. Schools closed for two days. Businesses cut off from the public. Amtrak re-routed to avoid Chicago. A man was blown into the lake and died. Power cut off everywhere. Internet down. 2000+ flights cancelled.

According to Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog famous for predicting winter, we only have two weeks until spring. Yahoo! Now I can happily go shovel my driveway of four feet of snow. Where’s my Mai Tai?

Zone Coach Predicts 26-20 Bear Victory!

Very rarely do I offer predictions on sporting events. There are so many variables that can come into play. I found even the most astute odds makers make prophetic blunders. However, a psychological “perfect storm” has been brewing for the last 30 days. First, there are two ways to win any sporting event: You go out and play your best, get in the Zone and totally pulverize the opposition. The other possibility is to let the opposition lose. Here are the following factors that have created this psychological “perfect storm:”

1. The Green Bay Packers have been in, on or near a Zone state of mind for over four weeks. The daily pressure that they have endured has been intense with Green Bay fans’ scrutiny as well as the microscope they have been under with the national media (the longest I have seen an athlete or team in a Zone state like this has been 33 days).

2. This will be the third week in a row the Packers have played on the road. As a former professional athlete, traveling can be fun but for the most part it is exhaustive. If routine breeds confidence, then playing on the road with variable routines can erode your belief and expectation.

3. Aaron Rodgers stated on national television, “I am in the Zone.” When you are aware of being in the Zone, you are not in it anymore. This is why a baseball pitcher that is on the verge of throwing a no hitter or perfect game sits alone in the dugout with silence as his only friend. Rodgers quarterbacked a near perfect game with the odds of repeating that back to back being slim to none. Possible? Not likely! Seldom do you see a PGA Tour player win two tournaments in a row.

4. The Packers have stated publicly that the worst playing surface in the NFL is at Soldier Field. Talking about it only makes it worse.

5. Jay Cutler played well for the Chicago Bears. However, he can play better.

6. Tim Masthay, punter for the Green Bay Packers, did not kick a punt during the Packer’s victory over the Falcons. Now he must punt in the swirling, cold winds just off of Lake Michigan. Typically, this is a kicker’s nightmare.

7. Chicago Bears have no significant injuries.

8. The quiet, humble and respectful Lovie Smith has an even keeled manner with his team. The Bears have had no trash talking. They are sequestered in Lake Forest focused only on the task at hand. They believe in the coaching staff’s strategies, tactics and schemes.

9. The Chicago Bears defense is at its best in the third and fourth quarter. The Green Bay Packers’ offense has been at its worst in the third quarter.

10. The Bears and the Packers split home and away games. However, the Bears played poorly in their last game with the Pack at Lambeau Field, yet barely lost by 7 points.

11. Home teams typically have an advantage. The Bears have defeated the Packers three times at Soldier Field over the last four games.

12. The NFC Championship Game at Soldier Field between the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers is being heralded as one of the greatest sporting events of all time. This sporting event scenario has not happened since 1941. Pressure? Yes! National media scrutiny? Absolutely! Inspection, dissection and microscopic overkill? For sure! There is pressure to perform no matter what you think or say.

13. Soldier Field on January 23, 2011 will feel greater than a Beatles’ reunion or a Michael Jackson reincarnation concert. Advantage: Bears.

Based on the above, I predict the following:

1. Rodgers will play flawless in the first quarter and the Pack will take a slight lead.

2. The Bears will rally in the second quarter and tie the Pack or have a slight edge by halftime.

3. The Bears coaching staff will prepare for the second half better than the Packers.

4. The first ten minutes of the second half will be a war.

5. Mental fatigue will begin to envelope the Green Bay Packers. With less than 20 minutes to go, the Pack will start to make mistakes with dropped balls, penalties and personal fouls.

6. Robbie Gould will be masterful with four field goals in this game.

7. Special teams of the Bears will dominate, especially in the second half.

8. Tim Masthay, Packer punter will make a costly mistake.

9. Chicago Bears will close with more intensity than the Green Bay Packers.

10. Prediction: Chicago Bears- 26, Green Bay Packers -20.

Of course, there are other variables that can definitely happen. Injuries, crazy plays, changing weather conditions and unexpected Zone performances can all alter the outcome. This is why we love our sports! And this is why grown men still play this game.

What are the odds of winning the lottery? Slim to none. Right?

A good friend of mine plays $40 every week on the Illinois Lottery. I know. I tell her all the time she is wasting her money. Last week, she walked in to her normal venue to make a purchase. The woman behind the counter knew her regular customer by name. Wow! “Your usual $40 of Quick Pick?” asked the clerk. “No, I’m just going to get $35. My friends say I’m nuts. I need to be more frugal,” she laughed. The guy behind her in line said, “We’re going to win. I feel it. Good luck!”

This week my friend walked into the same Lottery venue and the lady behind the counter screamed, “Oh my gosh. Look! Do you know who won?”

My friend looked up and saw the winning ticket was purchased in this very store. The lucky winner pocketed $5 Million plus!

Then the clerk stated, “After you only purchased $35 of tickets and not your usual $40, the man behind you (the person that had been talking to my friend) purchased your $5 ticket.”

He had won the $5 Million!!!

Of course, I have been blamed for this loss of millions. That’s right! If I hadn’t told her that playing the Lottery was foolish, she would’ve bought her usual $40 worth of tickets and the rest would be history.

Illinois Basketball in the Zone

The Fightin' Illini were dominant in their Big 10 match-up with Northwestern. The game was decided within the first 10 minutes as Bruce Weber's team was locked in the Zone. 70.5 % shooting for the night set an Illinois program record. What focus! Illinois over Northwestern 88-63! No contest!

It's been fun working with Coach Weber, his smart staff and a great group of young student/athletes these last few months. I loved watching Mike Tisdale tonight get aggressive in the paint. As he dropped two left-handed baby hooks off the glass, he showed he has finesse as well as grit. Mike Davis was Zoning on both sides of the ball. Demetri McCamey showed why he's up for the John Wooden Award as "Player of the Year" with great 3-point range,precision assists and floor generalship.

The bench especially stepped up with Jereme Richmond and Meyers Leonard scoring 11 points each. DJ Richardson rounded out the double digit scoring with his usual hot hand contributing 10 points.

All in all the team was in the Zone the entire night as they choked the energy out of the visiting Wildcats. Will they be ready for the stress facing the Big 10 powerhouses? I believe they will.

Coach Weber and staff have been very consistent in preparing their team for the games that matter the most.

College hoops? How much fun am I having? Next up: Penn State

Self-discipline:

Commit to what you want to achieve. See it as if it’s so. See it as it will be.
Plan each quarter, month and day. Even plan the “day-off “ day. Make sure work doesn’t interfere.
Take good care of YOU. Plan your health.
Set positive routines. Repetition…repetition…repetition…repetition.

Concentration:

Focus on leveraging the key people in your life. These influencers will have an impact on your year. Make them better. Immunize yourself from their “down” moments. Communicate openly and honestly.
Focus on one project at a time.
Finish what you start. Close like a champion.
Be the Cheetah! Stay hungry.

Optimism:

Sell you on you at all times. Positive self-talk.
Chin up when faced with adversity.
Add belief and expectancy to your daily thoughts.
Spread your optimism to all around you. Even strangers.

Relaxation:

Meditate daily.
Take mini-vacations. Take "unplugged” long vacations.
Re-boot your brain (90-seconds) often.
Keep your jaw unhinged. Breathe long and deep often.

Enjoyment:

Laugh out loud more often.
Enjoy your family-time…savor it. Play often.
Music, music, music.
Skip for no reason. Be spontaneous. This balances your self-discipline.

Unsung Heroes

The few athletes and entertainers who recently made the news have definitely created a bad impression of celebrity. Hearing the names of Ben Roethlisberger, Miley Cyrus, Michael Vick, Mel Gibson, Michael Phelps, Tiger Woods, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan conjures up feelings of negativity. These performers and entertainers have garnered mass quantities of negative press over the last year. Where are the good guys? Where are the great stories of humanity? Serbian-born Vlade Divac was an NBA All-Star with the LA Lakers, Sacramento Kings and the Charlotte Hornets. His performance on the basketball court filled Serbians worldwide with pride. He was a star. But he is so much more than a celebrity athlete. Last weekend I attended an event at Topaz Restaurant in Burr Ridge, Illinois with Vlade Divac and his beautiful wife, Ana. Yes, Vlade Divak has retired from professional basketball. He has used this opportunity to establish Humanitarian Organization Divac (HOD). The aim at his foundation is to raise money to build houses for the many refugees in Serbia. This project has the full cooperation of the United Nations and other charity organizations. As Vlade’s wife, Ana, told of the plight of the refugees, I watched the 7 foot 1 inch, 250-pound giant of a man weep like a child. Rubbing his eyes at the sights and sounds of his fellow countrymen’s plight was overwhelming for him. With passion and commitment, Vlade Divac and his wife are helping the homeless find homes. They are making a difference. There are many athletes and entertainers in the world who donate millions of dollars and hundreds of hours to charity. Vlade Divac is one of them. Thank you, Vlade, for an inspiring event. You showed that you are a true Champion. You are an unsung hero.

Out of Body Experience

I’m from Kentucky. In fact, I’m from the hills of eastern Kentucky. It’s a tough place. I was raised near Hazard, one tough coal-mining town of 4,806 occupants. Later I moved to the river city of Ashland. The radio station call letters are WCMI. It stands for Where Coal Meets Iron. I was raised to fight for whatever I wanted. I later played tennis that way on the pro tour. I coach tough. And for the most part, I feel I am tough.

But not last Saturday.

I was waiting in my car for my wife. She tapped on the window and screamed, “Get in here! Now!” I was startled and thought something was seriously wrong. As I bolted from the car and dashed into this storefront on North Clybourn Avenue in Lincoln Park (Chicago), a little Korean lady told me to sit and I did.

The next thing happened so fast. My eyebrows were waxed. While yelling like actor, Steve Carell in the 40-Year Old Virgin movie, she actually called me a “baby.”

My wife was cracking up…especially at my red forehead and stunned look.

Leaving my wife with her business associates, I strolled south toward North Avenue and without thought went into an Outer Mongolian-owned nail salon. I did. I was the only guy. Without hesitation I ordered a manicure and pedicure. Both. Some alien must have taken over my body. I found myself with both feet in a tub watching the Sex in the City movie on a plasma screen on the wall. What! Are you kidding me? It was as if I was looking down from the ceiling at the Zone Coach getting a foot loofah.

The movie wasn’t that bad and my nails looked great…but I did look around as I left the premises to see if I knew anyone. No Kentucky license plates anywhere. Phew! “I need a beer. I need to watch football…NOW.”

I walked south across North Avenue into the Burger Bar and quickly ordered a “Dead Guy” ale. I immediately felt manly as I watched a head-bashing college football game and the #1 Duke Blue Devils pummel their basketball foe. Okay…I’m fessing up! After my third beer, I ordered a foie gras burger for $24 and it was the best burger I’ve ever had. What would my dearly departed father say to that?

As I walked back to the car, I passed a Crate & Barrel. “Wonder if we need any dishes?”

I dashed that notion out of my mind as I answered a client’s call with a tough voice, “This is Jim!” Back to my Kentucky bluegrass mindset. The roots are still intact in the hills of rugged Appalachia. Yes they are! I’m tough.

Anyway, my next wax isn’t for another three weeks.

How in the World are the Bears Winning?

A lucky play, a missed call, a crazy penalty…all of these at the right time and place have helped the Chicago Bears to a 9-3 record. Every sports pundit has questioned the heart and soul of this Chicago Bears team. Are they lucky? Or is their newfound belief and expectancy permeating the playing field? It really doesn’t matter what anyone thinks. It only matters what the coaches and players think before, during and after every game.

Will they win the Superbowl? I have no clue. But I do know this…good fortune favors the bold, and they are going for it with everything they have. Go Bears!

In 30 days, 2011 will arrive. What can you accomplish in this amount of time? Be as productive as possible between now and the new year. Lock in with tunnel vision in your Primary Arena and see your goals completed as if it is so.

With the holidays comes a boatload of possible stress. Be sure and take time out for you. Use the 90 Second Rule to clear your mind three or four times every day. Pace yourself. Finishing the year strong will help you get off to a great start in 2011.

Go Illini! Last night was tough for the University of Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball team. In Madison Square Garden they were out hustled by the University of Texas 84 to 90. This high scoring run and gun game was exciting but still disappointing for the orange and blue. The key to winning basketball is defense, and theirs was porous at best. It became obvious that the seasoned veterans from Illinois were being out-hustled as their younger opponents showed more energy and team solidarity. This game was obviously winnable. Congrats to Texas. Good luck to Illinois against Maryland.

Close Like a Champion

We have arrived at the last official PGA tournament of the year with the Children’s Miracle Network Classic in Lake Buena Vista, FL.

There is a lot on the line for the competition in the field. Mat Goggin needs a win and has been striking the ball better than ever. Joe Durant is looking for a top ten finish and has been flirting with a major Zone performance for a month now.

I am excited about the University of Illinois Men’s Golf coach Mike Small who is primed and ready to show the regular Tour boys how to put the ball in the hole! Its a little known fact that Mike Small’s putting results at the Titleist Testing Facility were the best ever recorded. Now that’s putting in the Zone! I expect Mike to average less than 30 putts per round.

FIGHTING Illini!

Approximately 24 hours before the University of Illinois men’s basketball team’s first regular season game, I was in Champaign, IL addressing the squad. I shared with them the five keys to personally and collectively attract the Zone. These five principles of the S.C.O.R.E. Success System include Self- Discipline, Concentration, Optimism, Relaxation, and Enjoyment. I was very basketball, classroom and college life specific.

Head Coach Bruce Weber was very kind in his introduction of me before practice inside fabled Assembly Hall. His team of young men was extremely receptive and eager to learn how to improve their performance as elite student/athletes. Later I witnessed the nations 13^th ranked team apply my Zone principles and techniques while preparing for their first matchup against University of California-Irvine.

Last night in their much anticipated season opener, the Zone arrived and I’m not talking about their staunch defense. The Fighting Illini easily handled their opponents from California, winning by a final score of 79-65. The seasoned veterans showcased their talents while allowing their young freshman teammates to experience their first college game.

I’m looking forward to assisting Bruce Weber and his terrific assistant coaches this season. This Fighting Illini squad is a group of very talented individuals who are on a mission to take home the Big Ten championship and a berth in the NCAA Final Four!

Sparky Anderson has died. His passing on my birthday made my youth collide with the present.

Sparky Anderson was the manager of the Cincinnati Reds. And they were MY team growing up. The Big Red Machine was the greatest baseball team ever. Back-to-back World Series Championships graced the 1975-76 Cincinnati Reds. And I was part of it in every way possible. I had followed the Reds with my father since the days of legendary Crosley Field. I grew up having Vada Pinson and Frank Robinson as my heroes. Dad and I listened to every game on the radio. Living a mere 131 miles up the Ohio River from the Queen City, we took in a dozen games per season. Those were fun trips. The Reds bonded my Dad and I like nothing else. Even when we made each other mad, we always could talk about the Reds.

After I moved out of the house to chase my dreams after college in 1971, my father and I still remained close while discussing the Reds on a regular basis. I remember the first time I heard the name Sparky. It was 1975 and my beloved Reds just hired an unknown manager, Sparky Anderson. As avid fans, Dad and I were shocked and furious. How could they hire an unproven, below-average minor leaguer to lead our Reds? No way!

But as history proved he was the "the crank that turned the Big Red Machine," which is now inscribed on Sparky’s Hall of Fame plaque. What a great manager he became! Leading a group of superstars in any sport is not easy. And Sparky did it with humility and grace. He put his players first. And they loved and revered him. He was a bandleader that could orchestrate runs and make pitching changes that stifled potent offenses. In fact, his other nickname was “Captain Hook” for taking out starting pitchers when the game started to shift against the Reds.

Greatness comes in all shapes and sizes. As the most unlikely manager, Sparky Anderson, walked into the Hall of Fame with the 4^th best all-time record of 2,194 wins and 1834 losses. He won three World Series titles and two AL Manager of the Year awards.

I met Sparky before a Detroit Tigers game while I was coaching A-Rod. I was nervous to meet him. After I introduced myself, I heaped a ton of praise on one of my childhood heroes…him. Sparky was humble, gentle, smiling and gracious. We talked baseball for a few minutes. You could tell he really loved the game…just like my Dad.

Dad…as you already know Sparky Anderson passed away. Go talk to him. You have a lot in common.

Who Will Finish the PGA Year #1?

Don’t you love watching the best in the world fight for the #1 position? I’m looking forward to seeing the finish to the professional golf season where the best player in the world could be any one of four players. The top spot will be settled within the last two tournaments. The next event is this weekend in Shanghai at the HSBC Champions.

Lee Westwood has a narrow lead over Tiger Woods and PGA champion Martin Kaymer as well as Mickelson, who is the defending HSBC champion, now at No. 4.

The money is on the table. Will the real man step up and grab the number one spot. Phil says is 100% ready. I doubt it. Mickelson likely would need at least a fourth-place finish this week to have a chance to get to # 1, depending on how the others fared.

Kaymer never has been close to this rarified air. However, he’s arguably played the best in the world in his last four events. With no outside pressure from the media, family or friends he could fly under the radar. I doubt it.

Westwood can keep it. He’s solid with high daily standards being met. Most feel he backed into the world’s top spot. A win this week will solidify his position. But I doubt it.

And that leaves Tiger. Does he have the game? I don’t think his technical game is up to par. However, he is a spurned world champion and betting against him against this field is difficult. I believe he can do it.

Tiger finishes #1 in 2010. We’ll see.

But this week I predict Luke Donald, a S.C.O.R.E. Success System student, will hoist the trophy. That’s right. Luke is the best in the world out of the bunkers and there is more sand on the course in Shanghai than in the Sahara.

I’m on my way to vote! I trust you all have, or will be doing the same. This is one privilege all Americans need to exercise. We can make a difference!

However, the politicians all seem the same. Although I know they say they are different, no one makes a stand and tells us exactly WHAT they wish to accomplish and HOW they are going to do that. Most of the rhetoric relates to how poor the opposition has been, while preaching the glorious "change" motto which has shown little to no actual CHANGE!

I don’t need hope; I need less credit constraints from the bank! I don’t need more promises; I need my Health Care plan to be less expensive while satisfying my needs! I don’t need a brighter future; I need my kid to have a better education with the money I already pay in taxes!

When I "pull the lever", will my candidates deliver the goods? Probably not! This is not my first rodeo; in 61 years on earth, I’ve heard all the promises.

Isn’t it amazing that 535 men and women dictate how our government is run? That’s all...535! Get it right this time, Please!

November is a Power Month!

Okay, Halloween is over. Take off your mask and throw the candy away. It’s time to get to work. The 30 days of November can and probably will have dramatic impact on the following:

Closing the 4th quarter on a positive note: With the month of December shortened because of the holidays, customers and prospects are tough to pin down. This is the month where you need traction to finish the quarter on a positive note.
Plan corporate holiday parties, gifts and cards: You better get started now if you want to have impact over your best clients and new prospects. In order to stand out among the rest, you’ll need to be creative. This takes time and preparation. Do not delay!
Plan personal holiday parties, gifts and cards: Prepare get-togethers with family and friends well in advance. Choose thoughtful gifts for each special person in your life. Get the holiday cards mailed out early.
Making personal/corporate tax decisions that impact the bottom line: Meet with your personal and corporate tax advisors. Foresee what you need to do to take advantage of the many tax breaks for 2010. Make this a priority!
Making solid grades for the end of the term: Increase your studies. Buckle down and chip away at every course. Now is the time to produce for a great quarter or semester.
Re-tooling your golf game for 2011: For the golfer that has his business and personal life in order, now is a great time to ponder what you want from your golf game in 2011. Bonding with family before the holiday stress: Before the stress of the holidays arrives, be sure you and your family are on the same page. Although November is a time for serious work productivity, don’t forget your family. Remember the 90-Second Rule™ as you enter your home.
Selling your goods and/or services: Now is the time to start clearing inventory. Holiday deals (if not planned already) need to be prepared and ready to go. Button down your clients before the chaos of December arrives.
Staying in shape before the feasts of the holidays arrive: Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, candied yams, apple pie and all the other fixins’ are on the way. Ramp up your fitness now so you won’t have to go on a crash course in January.
Preparing for 2011: What do you want out of 2011? Now is the time for businesses to sequester the key players offsite in order to plan the upcoming year. The majority of my corporate retreat participation occurs in November and early December. Make your plans now if you have not done so already. In reality, there are only 20 valid business workdays in this month when you factor in November 25th (Thanksgiving) and 26th. Make a major goal list of what you want to accomplish during this fall power month. It’s going to fly off the calendar. December will be here before you know it and chaos will have arrived unless you’ve prepared in advance. You know this all too well. However, most of us stay the same pace month after month until we are forced to act. Now, project yourself to December 1, 2010. You have just experienced the greatest month of your life. What have you accomplished? How has it impacted 2010? Now see it as if it is so. See the great accomplishments, as they will be. With this completed November vision in your mind, chronologically walk backwards from the 30th to this moment. Illuminate a pathway where your expectations will turn into reality. It’s time to gain some traction that will catapult you into an awesome 2011. It is just around the corner. Get in the trench. Dig deep and strong. Get in the Zone in November!

If Time Were A River

August is coming to a close and summer will soon be the past. Where did the time go? Doesn’t it seem like summer disappeared in a flash? Vacations are over, kids are now going back to school and football season has arrived. If time were a river, I’d slow it down. I’d build a dam so that I could stay in the moment as long as possible. If time were a river, I’d occasionally swim upstream so I could relive all the good times. If time were a river, I’d peacefully float while I basked in the beauty of its banks. I’d observe and enjoy the people that gather to play, sing and laugh. If time were a river, I’d maneuver the rapids with more balance and care. I’d stay calm and confident when white water approached because I would know still waters were just around the bend. If time were a river I’d get out occasionally. Here I’d take mental mini-vacations to replenish my energy and refresh my soul. If time were a river, I’d heighten all five of my senses as I moved downstream. If time were a river, I would go with the flow and bathe in everything it had to offer. If time were a river I’d ”give” to all on its banks. This would allow me to sleep better at night. The takers may eat better but their lives go by in a flash. Slow down your life. The best athletes in the world have a knack for slowing down the game. They see what most performers do not. It’s time to take a deep breath and relish what you have. Take a bath instead of a shower. Take a nap. Write a letter to an old friend. Take a break mid-morning. Walk outside during lunchtime. Take a break mid-afternoon. Play with your kids. Read a great book. Look people in the eye long enough to discern eye color. Use my 90-second Rule. Dance whenever and wherever you can. Go to a baseball game. Exercise. Attend a yoga class. Ride your bike. Laugh out loud more. Garden. Take up a hobby. Call your Mom for no reason. Send someone flowers just to say “I’m thinking of you.” Volunteer. Slow dance to no music with your significant other… everywhere (mall included). Help the needy. Take care of your neighbors. Be nice at all times. Smile at every encounter with a stranger even if they don’t. Don’t take yourself so seriously. Write a love letter. Take a “Ferris Buehler’s Day” off. Think of meaningful Christmas gifts… now! Be thankful. Swim. Encourage a friend. Can you slow down and still win? Don’t forget the race between the tortoise and the hare. Life is a marathon… NOT a sprint. If time were a river… what would you do?

Where Are The Men?

Where are the men? Yes, Tiger Woods is the #1 World Class golfer. Yes, Tiger Woods is the greatest that has ever played; however, Tiger Woods is a street fighter first and foremost. It will take a street fighter mentality to fight a street fighter. Tiger stalls, picks up the pace, and has all the right moves that can destroy the tempo and confidence of the opposition. We have seen Tiger do this over and over again. What I overheard yesterday at the 91st PGA Championship at Hazeltine was appalling! I heard a competitor talking and he said "It's ominous with Tiger Woods leading in the first round." He said it like a 12 year-old autograph seeking fan instead of a ferocious competitor in the round to win. Where are the men? Ali had Frazer. Jack had Arnie. Federer had Nadal. Who does Tiger have? No one! I have been talking to lots of coaches and players. The ones looking around waiting for someone to compete with Tiger Woods aren't the ones! It will take someone with tremendous self-discipline; someone with focus like a cheetah who hasn't eating in a week; somone with optimism that is more belief than expectancy. Someone who enters the zone of "knowing." It is a street fighter that is cool in the moment of truth. That moment when the next swing or putt determines the action. The street fighter mentality only executes the basics when this occurs. This competitor has a passion for problem-solving while performing at the highest level. Will it be Harrington? Maybe. But he faltered last week. Will it be Ernie Ellis? I doubt it. Will it be Michelson? I doubt it. Will it be Sergio? I don't think so. I think he'll back away. Maybe it will be someone obscure like Mat Goggin. Someone who is in an isolated part of the world called "Tazmania." Someone who is oblivious to the world pressure. Someone who is capable of playing under the radar, stealing the Wannamaker Trophy like a thief during the night. Where are the men?

Play Ball!

I’m pumped about spring training with my clients for 2009. I see great things for Carlos Delgado, Alex Cora, Javier Vasquez, Casey Blake and Mike Cameron. I love this time of year. It definitely reminds me of when I was a kid playing Little League ball. If you’re anywhere near a spring training site, it’s the best time to see your favorite team or players. They are fan-friendly, up-close and the atmosphere is the best ever. A dog… a beer… and a day game… what could be better!

Goggin upsets Perry

Today at the Accenture Match Play Championship, with Tiger’s return to the Tour flashing all over the headlines, Mat Goggin pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament. Facing Kenny Perry in the first round, Mat closed him out 2 and 1. Perry, who finished last year red-hot and continued his streak this year with a win at the FBR Championship, did not go away quietly. However, Mat has been working on closing the last 6 holes with up-tempo energy and a clear mindset. By birdying the par 5 17th hole, at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Tucson AZ, Mat closed out like a champ. Next up, tomorrow Mat faces Paul Casey who defeated Aaron Baddeley.

What? A recession?

I just came back from a business trip to Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the world. It was packed! An authority at the local airport reports approximately a 20% decrease of passengers into McCarren Airport in 2008. But you couldn't tell. The strip was jammed with humanity at midnight both nights I was there. The largest difference I did observe was in the restaurants and shops. The casinos and passageways were full, but the restaurants and shops were noticeably void. Even the shows, normally sold-out, had empty seats in them. My assessment of this is that people still want and save up for weekend vacations and escapes, but they go on a budget.

But as one pit boss reported, the high rollers are still rolling in excess.

Life Technologies

I have recently started coaching a company called Life Technologies, a global biotech tools company dedicated to improving the human condition. Their systems, consumables and services enable researchers to accelerate scientific exploration, driving to discoveries and developments that make life even better. What a wonderful company! They are making scientific tools so that we may be healthy! I am honored to help them get in the Zone.

Their numbers are just as impressive as their mission statement. With a staff of 9500, they have reached historical sales of $3.5 billion, have a presence in more than 100 countries and have over 3600 patents and exclusive liscences.

Linking Life Technologies to current events is quite simple: they work with embryonic stem cells. Recently our new president Barack Obama has lifted a ban placed on their research. Quoting a recent article called "Stem Cell Research: A Quest Resumes" in Time Magazine by Alice Park, "on Jan.23, after nearly a decade of preparation, the Food and Drug Administration approved the first trial of an embryonic-stem-cell therapy for a handful of patients paralyzed by spinal-cord injuries."

What a great time to be working with these embryonic stem cells! In December of 2008, Life Technologies "announced it will use human embryonic stem cells to develop new models of Lou Gehrig's Disease and other neurodegenerative diseases." Seeing as this was before the ban was lifted, without the grant they received from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, this would not have been possible. But now that the ban is lifted, I believe that funding is going to be available from the government to create new products in the future. This means Life Technologies will be able to create and sell more products using embryonic stem cells in the future.

I am currently training the Life Technologies staff of sales people about how to sell these wonderful biotech tools while being in the Zone. With this new information and technology, and armed with S.C.O.R.E. tools, Life Technologies will break that historical sales record of $3.5 billion without breaking a sweat.

Bob Davis

Who is the best photographer in the world? I'm sure this topic is debatable, but right now I am coaching a prime candidate for the lofty spot. His name is Bob Davis and he is a humble photographer who lives in the Chicago-land area. His resume is quite impressive, having worked for the Chicago Sun-Times for 14 years, as well as photographing Eddie Murphy's wedding in Bora Bora (in which the album lasted longer than the marriage), Eva Longoria and Tony Parker's Parisian wedding, Tyler Perry's studio opening, and multiple events for Oprah and her studio.

His art is of visual storytelling. He is comfortable shooting stills and movies. Bob can get in the Zone with just the click of a camera. Recently, he was by the Mississippi shooting eagles in flight... eagles fishing... eagles nesting... eagles soaring over the mighty Mississippi.

With his wife and partner, Dawn, they can deliver the goods of a photo album that tells the story of an event and a life.

I am blessed to be helping a true craftsman and someone who knows the essence of what he's about. I look forward to great things from the world's best photographer, Bob Davis.

Did you eat your Grandslam today?

Wasn't it amazing how 2 million people went to Denny's yesterday for a free Grandslam? That's a lot of eggs! This was one of the greatest stunts ever in the restaurant industry. And this is coming from a franchise that over the past few years has not had an image of being the place where you should go eat breakfast.

Most of the companies I am talking to are trying to reconnect with their customer, including the PGA Tour. After meeting with Tour players and Tour officials, the hot topic was how to help sponsors and fans leverage their tour experience. The players are aware of their good fortune they have experienced over the past years. And they, like the rest of Americans right now, want to keep it up.

With Tiger Woods out and ratings down, everyone is concerned about creating a memorable experience. They are also concerned about helping sponsors leverage their dollars. One thing the Tour has going for it is its charity affiliation. They've given more to local charities than anyone in any other sport.

The winds have changed. The Tour needs to be more fan-friendly. Foresight is now focused on making a product that gets better and better. I hope most companies and organizations are focusing on making their customers satisfied. It's really about getting back to the basics.

Sunsets and Simplicity

One of the greatest events that happens every day is the sunset. My experience in travels around the globe has shown me that sunsets are as varied in color and magnitude as people. The sunset from the balcony of the Lodge at Torrey Pines in California is one of the most spectacular I have ever seen. I'm here preparing Tom Pernice, Jr., Mat Goggin, and Joe Durant for their quests to win the Buick Open. But last night on the balcony facing the Pacific Ocean I was in awe of this southern California sunset. There was no place I would have rather been.

Now when times are so hard and people are struggling, it's appreciating the small things that can give life a much-needed boost. A smile, a sunrise or sunset, a child's laugh, a hug... these are all the details of life that can uplift the spirit.

At dinner last night my clients were not talking about golf. They were talking about the 90 Second Rule and its impact on their lives and relationships. I can't tell you enough about how this simple rule has made its way around the world. It has been embraced by people from Australia, China, Korea, Japan, Italy, France, Germany, Russia, Spain, England, the Canary Islands, Belgium and Scotland. It's another small thing that can create a ripple effect for how you feel and how those around you feel.

Wherever you are, don't forget to look at the sunset at night. It can recharge even the most tired of spirits.

Why the Steelers Won the Super Bowl

The storied franchise of the Pittsburgh Steelers not only has a tradition of winning but they also expect it. Every year, they expect to field a team that will take them to the Super Bowl... every year. This expectancy surpasses just the winning belief that most teams have. This is the single difference as to why this franchise has won 6 Lombardi Trophies.

Don't get me wrong, the Cardinals absolutely had a team that could have held up the Lombardi Trophy. They believed with every cell in their bodies that they could win the Super Bowl. But with two teams so equally matched, it's the one who expects and knows that they will win that will prevail. The confidence level of both teams was high, which helped to fuel one of the best Super Bowls in history.

If you have belief, work with repetition of thought regarding your expectancy and sense of knowing you will succeed. This is how victory can be insured.

And now to switch to golf... I'm off to the west coast!

Mat Goggin

Look for Mat Goggin to do well at the FBR Open in Scottsdale, AZ this weekend. According to his swing coach Dale Lynch, "Mat is striking it." Mat's been poised for some time to get his first tour victory and once that happens, lightning will strike swiftly. After that Metallica concert, I should be able to relate to him. My ears are still ringing two days later.

Brooke Pernice

Last night, Tom Pernice, Jr and his youngest daughter Brooke Pernice were in Boston. She was there to sing the National Anthem at the Boston Celtics-Sacramento Kings game. When I talked to Tom about the experience, as you can imagine, he was a very proud and elated father. As any normal father would feel this way, he is especially proud because she is blind from a rare genetic disease called Lebers Congenital Amaurosis. In front of a crowd of 18,624, she blew them all away. Tom had one of the best nights of his life! I not only love watching my client's perform but I love it even more when I get to see them being the best dad they can be. Congratulations Tom and aspiring country singer Brooke! Metallica

Speaking of Mat Goggin, he FedExed me 2 tickets to his favorite band... He told me I needed to go to relate to him better... to understand him better.

And Metallica was awesome! Larz Ulrich and James Hatfield were Zone performers with all out energy. No... I didn't get into a mosh pit or crowd surf, although my assistant coach Gaston was encouraging me to do so.

As I write this, I still can't hear. I'm visualizing having my hearing back soon. Goggin's in trouble though. It's an easy trade... I go to Metallica... he wins the FBR Open.

Upon my arrival back to the States, Tom Pernice, Jr. finished top 10 at the Bob Hope Classic in Palm Springs. He was awesome and very close to pulling a win.

Matt Goggin also made his 2009 PGA Tour debut and was solid with a top 25 finish.

Around the World in 8 Days

I just spoke for 12 hours in 8 days with my itinerary as follows:

Chicago, Illinois-> San Diego, California-> Salt Lake City, Utah-> Chicago, Illinois (just to pick up my passport and a clean set of clothes)-> Los Angeles, California-> Melbourne, Australia-> Singapore, Singapore-> Milan, Italy-> Barcelona, Spain-> Tenerife, Canary Islands-> Madrid, Spain-> Miami, Florida-> Jacksonville, Florida-> Chicago, Illinois

My luggage never made it from LA to Melbourne and traveled around the world by itself, beating me home by one day. The suitcase I bought also never made it back with me.

It was over 50 hours in a plane to speak for 12 hours.

The best part was that I met the nicest people in Australia and all those countries in Europe. Everyone understood the S.C.O.R.E. system and was excited to implement getting in the Zone.

The highlight of my trip was an open ride in a wildlife game preserve where a rhino bumped its horn on the jeep and a giraffe stuck its nose under the canopy. My first class Singapore Air flight was unbelievable. Caviar and Dom Perignon were flowing freely. I never experienced 5 Star treatment at 40,000 feet!

Of course, with the good, there was the bad. My Iberia Air was 4 levels below Air Tran. It was a bus with wings! The suit I had to buy would have been tailored better by Stevie Wonder. Of course I on stage in jeans and a t-shirt and no one cared. But in an expensive suit that looked like it was made for a flood, people made comments about how badly my suit fit.

The experience was memorable, exhilarating, and finally... exhausting.

11-Steps to Guarentee Positive Change in 2009

We all have good intentions this time of year. I'd like to lose 30 pounds... I'd like to get back into a size 4 dress... I'd like to increase my sales... I'd like to be nicer to my family... I'd like to eliminate worry... I'd like to play tennis again... Across America this list goes on and on and on every year at about this time. New Year's resolutions made... New Year's resolutions failed. Here's how you can make them stick. 1. Out with the old... In with the new. It's time to bury 2008. Take down your holiday decorations. Get rid of everything that is unwanted (you're on your own with relationships). It's time to start fresh. It's time to wipe your slate clean. It's time to prune the tree. Change your "worn-out" expressions that you sprinkled in all your conversations in 2008. If you are still using, "Yada Yada Yada"... bag it. Forget how you used to managed your money in 2008. Clean your closets. Give your "fat clothes" to Goodwill. It may be time to get a new broker, banker, accountant, dentist, physician, attorney or psychic. It may be time to re-invent you. 2. Be realistic. Make a list of things that are possible. Limit your resolutions. It's better to change one big thing than five little ones. However, it's ok to reach for goals that are a stretch. For example, as a 14-handicap golfer, becoming a scratch golfer within the next 12 months is more than a stretch. This is especially true if you have a full time job and a spouse and 3 children at home. It's more realistic to reduce your handicap to a 9. This is a resolution that could be possible if it's planned out in detail. Remember...your resolutions cannot be about something that you physically or technically cannot do. 3. See what you want...NOT what you don't want. Avoid statements like "I don't want to swear any more." Instead, say, "I have clean speech." 4. Make your resolutions measurable. I want to be happy... I want to lose weight... I want to get healthy. These are all nice thoughts but they are only wishful thinking. A resolution that is measurable is something like I want to weigh 122 pounds by 3/1/09 or I will play tennis competitively in a league by 6/1/09 or I want to be vice president of my company by 12/31/09. 5. See it and say it as if it's so. I am going to lose weight is not a resolution. Act as if you have already accomplished your feat Say what you want in finished state. "I am fit at 140 pounds with 10% body fat." That is a resolution easier to keep. See this in your mind and say it as if it is so- this is one of the keys of how a champion thinks. You can't be 140 pounds in a body that sees itself as 160 pounds. 6. Work backwards. Millions of Americans will attempt to reach their resolutions by going from A to B. However, champions first mentally see B. Then they illuminate a pathway from B chronologically back to A. The champion then proceeds to literally move from A to B on a well-defined course of action. Now if you get off track you can easily find your way. Walk on your well-lit pathway from A to B as if it's so... as if you've already accomplished the goal. 7. Place a deadline. In order to make mental, physical and technical routine changes in your life, a deadline is mandatory. This deadline of accomplishment will create stress. This stress is good as long as it is created by you and for your benefit. Make your deadlines 12 months, 6 months, 3 months, or 1 month. Again make them realistic and make them definite. 8. Break it down. If you have an annual goal, break it down into months, weeks and days. Create an action plan and be aware of the tactics and strategies on a daily basis . Now change can be facilitated. Again make sure each part has a realistic deadline. 9. Remain positive. Negative self talk regarding your resolution will always end in failure. Avoid putting yourself down, talking about the past, comparing yourself to others or judging yourself. 10. Daily dress rehearsal. Mentally dress rehearse the night before the next day. See what you will accomplish regarding your resolution. This day is 1/90th of your quarterly goal or 1/365th of your annual goal. I personally lost 68 pounds by visualizing exactly what I would eat the next day and exactly when and what I would do for exercise. I performed this dress rehearsal in a relaxed physical and mental state every night before I went to sleep. 11. Repetition... Repetition... Repetition. Thinking about your positive resolution will work when your thoughts are consistent See accomplishment just before you go to sleep at night and just as you wake up in the morning. Framing your day by seeing it as if it is so will create the repetition and persistence needed to accomplish great resolutions. Success is getting up one more time from defeat. If you fall off the wagon on the way to the resolution get back up immediately. As your mom probably has said, when faced with a setback..."Keep your chin up!" The above 11-step formula has worked for hundreds of professional athletes and thousands of successful business people around the world. Be mindful that you are making these resolutions for your best friend... YOU. Treat yourself like a champion and the resolutions will become routine. I predicted a US victory in the Ryder Cup the minute I heard Tiger Woods would not be playing. Every time that Tiger has participated all the emphasis was on him. All of his teammates talked about Tiger. Although he never meant to be a distraction, his persona and aura overshadowed his teammates to the point that they underperformed. Paul Azinger was masterful at selecting and utilizing his team, whereas Nick Faldo tripped on his ego and completely mismanaged the Ryder Cup experience for his European squad. Placing his best for last in the singles matches was a major blunder and he will take heat for that for a long time to come. I was sad to see Luke Donald (one of my clients) not able to participate this year for Europe. With recent surgery on his wrist it will take a monumental effort for him to get back to the stature that he has held. However I have confidence that Luke will prevail and get back on form and regain his ranking in a prominent place on the PGA Tour for 2009.

On another golf note, I recently had the pleasure of conducting a private golf school with some of the best instructors in the country. Mike Adams, former PGA Tour director and current Director of Instruction at Hamilton Farms Golf Club in Gladstone, NJ, Brian Mogg of Orlando and the great Jim Hardy from Houston were all part of a team that provided great insight into all facets of the game. The other instructors were Mark Hackett, Scott Munroe and Marius Filmalter. I have worked with Mike and Brian before and have recognized their vast experience in taking a good player and turning them into a great player. It was my first experience with Jim Hardy and his reputation... and he exceeded his reputation. He minced few words, but when he spoke it was worthy of note taking. His understanding of the golf swing and the golf psyche is definitely one of the best in the world. I would like to thank Mike Adams for putting the school together. I was humbled to be around such great teachers. There are not many opportunities to have a private chat with someone who has had a personal dialogue with Ben Hogan. It was a delight for me.

Leadership in Tough Times

For those of you running your own company or leading a major team, division or department within a company: if you haven’t done so already, now is the time to sharpen your vision for the forth quarter and specifically prepare for 2009. This vision must be simple and clear. The next step is to illuminate a chronological pathway from this vision (if the goal is to gross $1 million in sales in 2009, what will the sales be 12/1/09, 11/1/09, 10/1/09... all the way back to the first month of the year?) Once this pathway is fully illuminated for all to see, then it is dividing up all the tactics and strategies to the human resources so this happens. Everyone on your team must have the authority to make decisions in their own sector, which includes the responsibility and the accountability.

I highly recommend a weekly report for all those who directly report to you. This states on a macro level what they have done for the week and what they will do within the next week. This report should be concise, to the point and no longer than one page. Less is more in the 4th quarter and in the year 2009.

Less meetings but more productive meetings
Less talk but more accurate talk
Less waste but more solid investment
Less thoughts but more clear thoughts

Becoming efficient regarding the top and bottom halves of your profit and loss statement is crucial for survival in these turbulent times. The people in your company, division or department have other issues and thoughts besides the company. It’s a time when these thoughts need to be segmented and isolated from one another. It is the overlapping of thoughts across multiple life arenas that creates chaos indecision as well as poor decision. This furthers anxiety, impatience, distrust, disbelief, low optimism, severe negativity and ultimate depression. A great leader must recognize the consequences of being disorganized and invest time in order to save and leverage time. Sometimes a tree needs to be pruned in order to grow. Even though these times are tough on everyone, it may be time to prune the tree. Do not wait until the tree is dying. Pruning, water and sunshine can revitalize an otherwise ailing entity.

Leaders should be ahead of the pack. Unfortunately when this is so you will be alone. Your decisions will not always be popular. Listen to your intuition. Remember: intuition has real time information that conscious minds do not possess. Unfortunately it speaks softly and usually only once. Listen to this inner voice, gut feeling or vibe and act on it swiftly with trust and obedience. Good fortune favors the bold. However there is a fine line between being bold and foolish. Talking money

My great friend and client Bill King, who authors the King Report, has recently given me advice that is common sense. But he has given it to me in a way that got my attention. You see, Bill advises the best on Wall Street on what to do with their money. I have just learned, but always suspected, that what they do with their money is not what they tell us to do with ours. The advice is:

Invest only in company stocks that have services or goods that Americans or the global community absolutely need. One of my best friends, Peter Fleming, recently met with a Brazilian gentleman who owns the majority of the shares of the Belgium company that just bought Budweiser. Bad times make Budweiser a great buy... people still drink. We need our beer when things are at their worst.
Investing in hard currency, such as silver or gold, is a good play. Investing in Euros and the Yen is also wise.
Next, have cash that you can survive on for a minimum of 3 months. In addition, have enough cash in your house that can last you for a long weekend.

Be frugal in your purchases and be conservative in your investments. Listen to your hunches... they will be right. This message is not to scare anyone. But the real deal of our economy according to Bill King and his global liaisons is the issue due to derivatives. Wall Street has leveraged the farm based on derivatives. This is the real culprit that is now clogging the financial pipelines. I find it terrifying that the media acts like fools to Wall Street and other salons. According to my sources... they just don’t get it. Take care of yourself... take care of your family. And manage your life out to the curb. Keep your mindset positive, free from worry as best as possible and continue to send your energy outward with your hopes high. Never succumb to the negativity that is swirling like leaves on a windy fall day.

As many of my clients are aware, I am writing my next book, with the working title called You’re awake. Are you aware?: Solutions, Answers and Tools for Empowering Your Life. For the last 18 months my travels around the country have revealed we are a nation under great stress. From our families to the work place the anxiety levels of individuals and collective groups are at an all-time high. The emails that I have been receiving are about people waking up and becoming aware of their disenchantment, chaos, worry and concern about many of their life arenas. I recently signed on with William Gladstone, who is the literary agent of Eckhart Tolle, best-selling author of New Earth and The Power of Now. My book will present concrete tools for improving relationships, parenting, sales, management, physical fitness, family communication, and other topics that my client base has requested. So far I am entrenched in the Zone, applying all of my principals to myself. After helping the New York Times best-selling author Tom Greanias get into the Zone for his writing, it’s time I turned it inward for myself. To date I am approaching 100 pages, fluctuating in and out of the Zone due to all the other activities in my life. Balancing a new project like this with my already hectic schedule is a challenge... but it is one that I am looking forward to meeting. I'll keep you abreast at how I am doing. The money is on the table for many baseball teams as they make a push for the playoffs and the World Series crown.

Carlos Delgado of the Mets is battling the Phillies and he is the hottest hitter in MLB! With two back-to-back HR games, he is in the Zone.

Mike Cameron had the game winning hit two nights ago at Milwaukee in the Wild Card hunt. The Brewers have two monster series coming up with the Cubs, the last one being the last 3 games of the year in Milwaukee. Cameron needs to put the ball into play and make something happen on the base paths.

Casey Blake's new home in LA finds him hot in the playoff race as the Dodgers have taken 3.5 game lead against the faltering Diamondbacks. When Casey hits the first pitch early to right field he has been very successful. He is a great presence to have in a clubhouse and he has all ready shown his value to the Dodgers.

Alex Cora is in another playoff battle with Boston. I'm amazed that he doesn’t play more. Every time he is in the lineup the team wins. Boston management doesn't get it. Of course... that’s my humble opinion. Cora is hitting near 300 and is by far one of the best clubhouse communicators in Major League Baseball. His value has and still is unnoticed and under the radar. That’s typical for the "good ol' boys network” of management and upper management. They don’t see the value in a player until he’s gone.

Javier Vasquez is throwing the ball extremely well although he has had bad luck due to poor White Sox run production. He has logged many quality starts, and as the money is on the table he will need to step up and deliver 7 or 8 innings of solid pitching. I have confidence in Javier. He will throw a baseball to targets with late-breaking, nasty stuff at the right time and in the right place. He will lead the White Sox into the Promise Land.

There will be many “moments of truth” during the next games. Play will decide the outcome of the game and the future of the team’s playoff chances.

Who is in the Zone… Republicans or Democrats? I’ve voted in every election since the early ‘70s. Never have I seen our country more divided. I’ve been an independent thinker voting for what’s best for the country, not necessarily what’s best for my wallet. Like most Americans I’m concerned about the future. Never before in the history of mankind have we received more information so fast from CNN, cell phones, text, email, FedEx and RSS feeds. We receive real-time information. Never before have I seen chaos thinking at its highest from the Fortune 500 all the way to the small business owner. We are a nation that is stressed and we are desperately seeking change. Both parties are now saying they are the change merchants. I highly encourage all citizens to vote for the agenda and not the person, with one exception. That exception is who we want to represent us in creating a shared vision for the future of the globe with as many countries as possible. These global partners, our allies, will give us the strength that we currently do not have. The issues are very simple in this election. 1. Which candidate will strengthen the dollar, create more jobs, fix our housing crisis, oil dependence and bottom line put more money in the individual’s pockets at the end of the day? 2. Which candidate has the best health care plan at the best price? 3. Which candidate has the best plan for improving the infrastructure of our country? i.e. roads, bridges, dams, etc 4. Which candidate has the best ten year plan for getting our country and consequently the world environmentally friendly? 5. Which candidate will reduce lobbyist influence in Washington? 6. Which candidate will be fair with all ethnic groups, age groups, religious groups and other pockets of difference that make up this great country? 7. Which candidate will protect our borders and ultimately protect us from another 9-11 attack? 8. Which candidate will avoid military conflict and keep us a peaceful, benevolent country? 9. Which candidate will strengthen our military at home and abroad in the event that military force is our last option? 10. Which candidate will provide the wisdom and fortitude to build our education system to the #1 world ranking? 11. Which candidate will protect the Constitution as it was written and as it was meant? There are many other issues that we could list that are important to most Americans. I encourage each person to make a list of our basic needs and with a simple checklist compare each candidate. It’s time we don’t vote party. It’s time we don’t vote personality. It’s time we vote for action. We have had many years of collective performance in a purposeful calm mindset as a nation. We have had self-discipline, concentration, optimism, relaxation and enjoyment. Based on my travels around the globe in the past 18 months, I have seen these elements out of balance, fractured and in peril. Whether you vote with your heart, intellect, wisdom or tradition… the bottom line is to vote. Encourage everyone to participate. Our children are waiting and the world is watching. Vote! America needs its “swagger” back.

The Money is on the Table

The money is on the table. It’s that time of year when baseball fever is at its highest pitch (pun intended). All of my baseball clients are in the race and they are all hunkered down in their trenches ready to perform the best that they can. My message to all of them is the same: Relax… let the Zone come to you. Next, the FedEx Cup, professional golf’s new version of the playoffs, is in full swing with Vijay Singh running away with it. Mat Goggin is my only client left playing in the rain-soaked BMW Championship in St. Louis. I’ll have to wait and see if he delivers the goods during the moments of truth. I believe he is ready and I expect him to be in Atlanta for the finals in two weeks. The Ryder Cup is next, and without Tiger and a struggling Mickelson, the Europeans look to dominate again. The money will be on the table. The US Open is down to the nitty-gritty. The question marks are many. Will Nadal prevail or will Federer regain the form that made him number one? American tennis is definitely slipping, although Mardy Fish showcased his skills to the world for really the first time since Sampras and Agassi, where so many other Americans have fallen short. College football and pro football are here and the excitement based on the fantasy leagues is extremely high. More fans are playing fantasy sports than ever before. Instead of just talking about their teams, they are now managing them. Sports are alive and well and it’s a great time where the money is on the table and only the strong will survive. Don’t you love it?

Honesty Rules

Honesty Rules Honesty is a word that is thrown around a lot. It is about being candid, sincere, open, truthful and frank. It is about integrity. Will the word honesty be front and center when your family and friends gather at your final resting place? It's amazing that an exemplary honest person is a rarity. Will the word honesty describe you? Most of us have been dishonest in our lives- myself included. I've lied to myself about my eating habits...mostly to protect my ego. I wasn't honest that my over-eating with ridiculous speed was just the tip of the iceberg. My conflict in one life arena spawned my over-eating. Finally my honesty broke the cycle of indulgence and I gained control of my body. Sixty-five pounds later I see that my head was in the sands of dishonesty. But I'm not alone. "I'll call you later today." Four days later you call. "I'm working out...getting in shape everyday." A lot of us lied to ourselves on this one. "Wow! I like your new dress. But NOT on you," you think to yourself. Most of us have been in every sense of the word...dishonest. Every day I see incongruent thoughts, feelings and actions. "Oh, it's not THAT big of a deal to fudge a little"...we've thought. "Tell her I'm not home." Wow...we've all used or heard that one. Many of us believe that to be politically correct we need to say what we really don't mean. But it is still not honesty. Of course, sometimes silence is a great replacement for poorly timed candor. Have you heard the former Governor of Minnesota, Jesse Ventura, speak? Like him or not...you have to agree he is honest about his thoughts or feelings. You know where he stands. Period! He's refreshing in an age of dishonesty. Most of us have had dishonest thoughts. Fortunately...most of us have not acted on them. Many of us have been deceitful...a first cousin of dishonesty. We mask our true feelings for selfish gain. We have all caught someone doing this. However, repeated negative thoughts of deceit will eventually manifest themselves into negative reality. Dishonesty will always spawn assumption thinking. "I can't come over tonight...something came up" I lied. My friend thinks "he doesn't like me any more" or "I bet he's going out with his old flame." Assumption thinking usually sprinkles our imagination on the situation. This causes more chaos, wasted thoughts and negative feelings all created from the vibes of dishonesty. I believe if we were all honest we would enjoy more peace, harmony and tranquility in our lives. Quarrels, ugly disputes, angry arguments and severe conflict could all be averted. Prevention is the key. Upfront honesty will keep communication doors from closing. It will squash assumption thinking and prevent rabid, runaway imagination that leads to gossip, rumor and hearsay. Honesty will help adjust most negative situations. Honesty can avoid an impasse. Finally, honesty can clean up the mess if things go awry. However, don't make honesty a tool. Don't just use when it's convenient or it's your last card to play. Make it a way of life. Be honest with your children. Mold their honesty by your honest deeds. If you find a wallet full of money, take it to the proper authority and report it. Yes...it may cost you the several hundred dollars in the wallet but the value for your children is priceless. If they steal something, discipline them with swiftness and authority. Teach them that dishonesty has a steep price. They will always pay with embarrassment, ridicule, sorrow, anguish, shame, dejection, rejection or misery. Be honest with the "significant other" in your life. Tell him/her how you feel, not just what you think. Remember: Negative feelings left unexpressed with always turn into negative actions. Be honest with your business associates. Your thoughts are always transmitted. Never assume. Tell your team upfront how business will be conducted. Tell them where they stand. Tell them how the company is doing. In your meetings always utilize the age old formula: Tell them what you want to tell them... Then tell them. Conclude by telling them what you told them. Honestly! (Sales Tip Du Jour: Nix the phrase...."to be honest with you" from your pitch. That's a deal breaker. An honest person never says that) State in advance, if you're the boss, your pet peeves. If it's being late, then tell your new hire that they are being paid to be on time and in a great mood. Every day. Tell them up front. Pull no punches. Let the truth be told. Be honest with your money. Never spend beyond your means. That's dishonest. That's an ego game. If we are honest with our money we would save for the rainy day like our grandparents. We would have less debt and more financial freedom. Be honest with your friends. Help them be the best they can be by being forthright. If they have changed and it's your opinion for the worse...tell them. Not to hurt them but to better them. Remember: honesty is not always the absolute truth but it is your perception of the truth. Give your honest perception. Honesty begins in the mirror. Understanding what makes you tick as a human being is paramount in "being the best you can be." It is here that your awareness needs to shift inward. "Think about what you think about" has been my message for over 35 years. Your honest thoughts will deliver the "purposeful calm" mindset that we all covet. My entire career has been based on honesty and integrity. There are no contracts or written agreements with any clients. Over 35 years of handshakes. Even with the Superstars and the Fortune 500 companies. Every arrangement has been on a handshake. Period! Our words should be our bond. Don't get me wrong...sometimes we need written agreements for accuracy but they should never be needed for honesty. All of my clients have been trained in the S.C.O.R.E.® Performance System. It is a thought management system for honest communication with yourself and others. They understand it and use it in all their life arenas. All of my clients know that a "true champion" is a champion in all their life arenas. This includes being a great friend, spouse, son or daughter, sibling and yes...a best friend to themselves. Honesty must blanket all arenas. All my clients know this from me. Honesty. Stick to your principles of living. Do not let fortune, fame or power cause you to stray. Keep your ego under check. Stay true to your beliefs. Be honest with yourself and then you will be honest with those around you. Speak the truth. Tell it like it is. Be blunt as a hammer. Put the cards on the table. Shoot straight. Be upfront. Look people in the eye and tell them what you think and feel. All of us need to periodically look in the mirror. Do you like what you see? Be honest.

Democratic National Convention

I'm a keen observer of the Democratic Party's Convention. I find it interesting how some speakers can get into the Zone Mindset while others just tip toe around it. Knowing full well that all of the speakers have practiced their speeches, only a few can perform with style and a relaxed demeanor while getting to the hearts of the people.

For the first time, Hillary Clinton did this. She is not the same speaker she was even a month ago. She finally has realized what to do, but now it is a little too late. The eloquent one, Bill Clinton, is very comfortable on the podium. He is very disciplined on what he wants the audience to know. He presents in a very relaxed manner, no different from kitchen table talk. Joe Biden's talk was positive on how he attacked McCain, but his delivery was no where near as polished.

Can you imagine walking into an arena in front of 80,000 people with tens of millions watching around the world expecting you to deliver the speech of your life... and then being able to pull it off? That's what Obama will try to accomplish tonight. And he's done it time after time.

The largest crowd I spoke to was 11,000 people. There is an electricity and rush that runs through you that is unparalleled talking in front of this many. When you really talk to the people from your heart, the crowd gives you an energy and makes a seemingly daunting task much easier. Obama taps into this energy, using it to his advantage. McCain hasn't quite figured this out yet. But i do like McCain's blunt talk. However, it seems many times like he is giving a speech and not talking to the heart and soul of his audience.

Although I'm not going to spout my preference of politics, I do know the American people need a leader to connect with. This connection is not only with themselves, the American people, but with the rest of the world as well. We are looking for a communicator that talks about our values on our American terms to the rest of the world. Tonight it will be interesting to see how one man handles the pressure and stress of this goal. Can Obama deliver the goods when the money is on the table? I wouldn't bet against it.

The Yankees are shooting themselves in the foot with poor pitching. They are not going to make the playoffs like this. A. Rod played solid with 2 doubles.
Carlos Delgado had 2 homeruns last night; he's at 30 homeruns tracking 40. He's easily going to have a 100 RBI season. The Mets are battling for 1st place with Philadelphia... it could go down to the wire.
The Dodgers and Diamondbacks are battling it out as well, but LA need to win 4 to 5 games in a row to get their momentum back. Casey Blake hit a homerun in a losing cause, but is really poised to close the season batting over 300.
Alex Cora is getting some playing time in Boston, which he deserves. His clubhouse presence helps him get into the Zone. I am looking forward to him closing out the season hitting 400 as well.

I'm in Boston for the Deutsche Bank Tournament, a part of the FedEx playoff system. I had dinner with Mat Goggin, Stuart Appleby, and Jasper Parnevik last night. The topic of discussion was about how confusing the playoff system is to the average fan. I am with Mat Goggin and Charles Howell III this week. Mat Goggin is hitting the ball the best he ever has. We are working on his short game this afternoon before he tees up tomorrow. He's having a great year, having pocketed $1.3 million and looking to chase the FedEx Cup's coveted number one spot.

Final Masters Thoughts

This much is obvious. Tiger can play below his standard and still finish 2nd at a major... Immelman was masterful. He was very much alone in a crowd as he moved around Augusta National. He kept the present tense the best and that's why he is wearing the green jacket...and Trevor's game is simple...almost every entrant thought about the danger on their next shot instead of seeing the target and releasing the shot...practicing 40-50% of your time on shots 100 yds and in is the wisest practice strategy (most will not do this)...during the week no one in the tournament and no spectators thought about the war in Iraq, the economy, the election or anything else. Just like the last three decades for me....same ol' awesome being in the moment....again the spectators proved they are the most knowledgable fans in the world...Snedekar is going to get better and better...Lefty has other things on his mind besides golf...Els switch to Butch Harmon was a slap in Leadbetters face and I don't believe it will help him....Lead didn't show at all this week due to an illness (hmmm)....there are 100+ parties every night in Augusta during the Masters ....T-Bones has the best steak in town....you need reservations at the Waffle House between 2:30am and 4am...my guys will be better prepared next year....Gaston was like a kid during his 1st Christmas and I loved sharing this Masters with him....and I will return again to walk the most beautiful real estate in the world.

Friday-Day of Reckoning

Today was a good day in many ways. First off...Charles Howell played well with a 70 and had many birdie opportunities, although they were not converted. Only eight players finished better. Luke played well but did not putt well, which is his strengh. Both missed the cut by one stroke with 44 players and ties playing two more days.Aaron Oberholser, a S.C.O.R.E. System graduate, played awesome and finished the day in 8h place. The Boys of Pressure are lurking with Tiger, Phil, Furyk, Reteif and Vijay within striking distance. The Newbies...Immelman, Snedekar and Poulter could easily fold with the pressure of the leaderboard and the nasty weather scheduled for the weekend.I followed Gary Player and was in awe of his physical presence. Although short in stature he loomed large in charisma and professionalism. This was his 51st year playing at the Masters. Playing in uncharacteristic all white, the Black Knight, was regal in his stage presence. On 16 the crowd gave him a standing ovation and he reciprocated with a bow and a classic tip of the cap. After his putt on 18 he kissed the ground and declared a few minutes later that he would be back for one moe year. Wow!I walked with Ronde Barber of the Tampay Bay Buccaneers and his wife Melissa while they followed their friend, Charles Howell III. What a great day!

Thursday-Under stress, use finesse

Less than 20% of the field finished under par today. The greens had mischief up their sleeves. Downhill putts were treacherous - with the wrong speed resulting in difficult comeback putts. The field was punished as they looked at long birdie putts when they missed. 3 putts were common.It's amazing to watch the best players in the world approach Augusta National's greens with trepidation. I've learned through the years that only the Master can play slow. A six foot winding downhill putt requires the hands and touch of a surgeon. Moving the putter slowly, steady and sure requires no grip pressure change. Calm breathing with a timed exhale is required. Every Masters that I've witnessed since 1978 has required each entrant to use finesses under stress. Getting off to a great start is crucial because making it up on the back 9 is likely not to happen. Most of the winners on the tour have found themselves twentieth place or better after Friday. This is why playing aggressive to very conservative targets is the best play. The aggressive part is just releasing every shot with a smooth finish. Pushing, guiding, or nurturing your shots is a timid play that will find you watching the Masters from your couch at home. Playing simple and solid has found twenty guys at even par or better. Defending champion Zach Johnson and world #1 Tiger Woods are in the top 20 pack with the rest of the group ready to break into pieces. Luke Donald was leading the tournament after 9 only to falter at the falter end of the round. Closing strong has been his mainstay for the past three years. I expect him to close mistake free today. Charles Howell III found himself in some strategically poor positions. His frustration showed and it did not serve him well. I expect him to be "more cool" tomorrow. Notes: Tomorrow's the day for interviews with Golf Digest and an NBC affiliate picking my brain ... today I hit the Augusta Chronical discussing why the Masters is so special - it's a place where time stands still - not one person thought about the Iraqi war, economy, or the election. It's all about golf, Magnolias, Azaleas and Pimento Cheese sandwiches ... randomly bumped into an old friend Vijay Amritraj - he's an Indian tennis star from the 70's who is doing Masters commentary back to his homeland. It was like old times back on the tennis tour speaking with Vijay ... spoke to Tiger's coach Hank Haney about doing a seminar with him at the Ryder Cup in Louisville this year ... spoke with all my baseball guys, especially Frank Thomas who needs to hit more solid ...

Wednesday- May the Best Man Win

Today was a day of fine tuning the engine. Most played only nine holes. Others worked on their short games.Here's the deal ... the winner on Sunday will have the mentality tonight that what I have is enough. The champion will embrace the following: It is not who has the most game. It's who needs the least to win. The crowd was in a festive mood today as the weather was perfect and the grounds were picturesque. At 3pm the infamous Par 3 Tournament was exciting and highly entertaining with controversial Rory Sabbitini winning the event. Of course no Par 3 Tournament victor has ever won the Masters in the same year. Sorry Rory.Tomorrow is center stage. All instructors, mental coaches, family members, and physical trainers have done their jobs in bolstering the game and mindset of their entrant. What's done is done. Solid ... patient ... cool ... simple ... smart ... persistent ... focus ... belief ... passion ... execution ... and strategy are words that will find the minds of every competitor this week at one time or another.So take a deep breath ... lock into the essence of your craft ... get a great night sleep ... and let the games begin. May the best man win.

Tuesday- Men at Work

Tuesday is the one day on the PGA tour where everyone works. The Masters is no exception. Most of the field played 18 holes. Their primary focus was playing the course strategically the way they will play it on Thursday. In addition they putted to all of the possible pin placements. Lastly, they pitched and chipped from precarious positions around the green to prepare for unexpected trouble. It was interesting to watch each pro find solutions to his self-induced predicaments. Augusta National was packed! The pimento sandwiches @ $1.50 were flying off the shelves. Just like Mom used to make...the course is the most beautiful in the world with an array of fantastic colors and shades. Each hole is named for the trees and flowers that adorn it. From Pink Dogwood (#2) to Azalea (#13) the course is a sanctuary of serene beauty. Even if you don't like golf it's a stroll that's worthy of consideration...an old wives tale has the word GOLF as an acronym for Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden. As I stood in line with 200 beer filled guys while the ladies room had no line, I believed for a second the acronym was true. Strategy is needed to orchestrate your bathroom breaks. With the urge-to-go controlling my thoughts, there was a moment where a mad dash to the ladies room was a strong possibility. Ok...back to golf.The greens were soft today and the boys were missing short. By Friday the greens will quicken and the difference between a poor, good or great putt will be miniscule. I saw 9 putts today look perfect only to slide off the green into serious trouble. And this was the soft day. Yikes!If you're not ready after today, you are in trouble. In fact, any doubts today will probably not disappear within the next 24 hours. Tomorrow is International Fine Tune the Ferrari Day. Less will be more. And I love to watch the infamous par 3 tournament in the afternoon. The countdown begins and the pressure will start to rise. I can't wait. I love this!

Monday- The First Step

The first step of the week was on the short grass. This is where the green jacket will be won. With the heat ramping up to 85 degrees on Friday, the first two days will be as slick as glass. Saturday calls for thunderstorms so we'll see what the weekend brings. Augusta National will be treacherous and the conditions could change on a dime. I was with Charles Howell for two hours and all of it revolved around his short game. Since he's played many weeks in a row this day was light. Emphasis was on quality of thought with very little interruption. We went seven minute intervals with no words spoken where Charles was working on holding his present tense focus. Twice Charles was interrupted. Once by Tiger as he came by to tell something funny to his good friend Charles. The other time was by Sergio who jokingly talked about winning the British before the Masters. "Interesting," I thought. There is always truth in jest. On both occasions I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs "Man at work!" Of course the putting green is the PGA tour's replica of the barber shop. After an hour Charles and I went to work around the green. Here the emphasis was on touch as well as breathing. He visualized the trajectory of each pitch, chip and sand save while seeing the ball roll to the pin. This is a challenge of balance. Be purposeful with well-defined toothpick-sized targets while being calm with exhales and soft hands. This "purposeful calm" balance was practiced for one hour. Everyone has a different approach. I heard one player only talk about his medical maladies. Immediately I scratched him off my "can win" list. Most are playing 18 holes just to get a feel for every angle, nook, and cranny of the course. Others spend hours on the driving range, diligently repairing a broken swing with their instructor. A few boys haven't even arrived yet. Even though the tournament doesn't start for three days, the Sunday afternoon boys are already set. If you could listen to the hidden thoughts of every participant it would reveal the contenders from the pretenders. I can feel the psychological safety nets being built. Winners win first then walk into the arena. Non-winners walk into the arena and then figure out what to do.Notes: All spectators, however, are in the Zone. They are disciplined as to who they want to see. They patiently watch every move of their favorite player. They stand and walk in awe of the masters and their swings. They are confident in the ones they want to win, but most have a sense of knowing of who the real victor will be. You feel their mindset change when Tiger graces their view. And every one has a clear plastic bag stuffed with Masters merchandise and memorabilia ... Augusta National is in perfect condition as usual....construction is underway for a new practice area that can accommodate the entire field at once...houses have been bought and torn down to make way for new parking and a private road for players and officials only to travel in and out of the grounds...and the restaurants are jammed and the locals are banking on extra cash from one of the greatest sporting events in the world. What a great first day.

Get Ready for Pressure

I love this time of the year! Amen's Corner, pimento sandwiches, magnolias and lightening fast greens that someone else has to putt. I must be in Augusta. I've been coming here for decades and I'm thirsting for a funky green jacket. Here's the deal. Monday through Wednesday is dress rehearsal. It will feature practice rounds where the main emphasis will be to putt to different possible pin placements while adjusting to the speed of the greens. Thursday through Sunday is where the money goes on the table. Whoever executes the basics (nothing more or less) will pick it up.I'm here tonight with Augusta native Charles Howell III and he knows this track like the back of his hand. His emphasis will be on putting speed during the first three days. Putting practice (since it is 40% of all shots) will be center stage. Thursday is "no thought" day. Get in the moment from the first tee box and stay there. Less thought. More intuition. A "let 'em lose" mentality will be my direction. This mindset will relax you and keep you from being too aggressive. Since 85% of the field will be out of contention after Friday either realistically or psychologically, the goal is reaching a high daily standard while relaxing. This mentality will let you work on problem-solving. Believing you are a world-class problem solver will give you an edge at Augusta National over most of the field. Speaking of field... Tiger ... well the Zone will be close if not draped all over him. Lefty, Ernie, Vijay and Furyk will flirt with it as well. Freddy seems to have caught a sniff of Masters past and will have a legion of fans waiting to see if he has one more like Jack. Doubt it. And the new boys are ... unpredictable. Their advantage is being naïve and unassuming. This is the J.B. Holmes bunch who are fearless with loads of talent. Watch Peterson, Allenby, Donald, Lonard, and Howell. I like them heading into the weekend.It will be an awesome week and then there will only be ONE. Winning won't just be about golf. Some boys lug around more than golf bags. Spat with a spouse...a promise to Dad...changing clubs with buyer's remorse...doubts about being on the BIG STAGE...dread playing with Tiger...nagging back spasm...unprepared for the media minions ... fatigue.... being a ticket broker for family and friends ... missing your kids... Closing the door on all life arenas except golf will be a challenge. But what I like most about this week --- PRESSURE. The majors are pressure cookers. How are these boys going to handle it?

Play Ball!

These two words keep me young. I first heard them 50 years ago. And every year those words make me smile. As a little leaguer expectations are high and spirits are soaring. I just left New York City and had a long chat with the Toronto Blue Jays’ great hitter, Frank Thomas. At 39 he’s no spring chicken, (especially in pro baseball years) but his love for the game is still running red hot in his veins. I’ve been with Frank his entire career. I’ve seen all his ups and downs. But what I like the most this year is his passion for his craft- hitting a baseball solid. Talk shop and his eyes light up. He looks great. He’s as imposing physically as ever. But this year he is different. He’s genuinely happy. His wife Megan has a lot to do with that… watch out pitchers! Big Hurt’s back in the house and he’ll be playing like a kid again.

Now… to change gears… I quickly call GE (new client)…call all my baseball clients… and I’m in the air to Houston for the PGA! Shell Open… looking forward to Charles Howell and Mat Goggin tomorrow on the course.

Play Ball! Yes, I’m a kid again you gotta love what you do and do what you love.

It Must Be Spring Break

It's the details! I'm finding most loose ends in life are about waiting on other people. Do you find that's true? I'm knocking out some paperwork before I go on a typical spring business trip. Where is my banker, accountant, repairman, attorney, illustrator and doctor? Calls went in and nothing came out. Of course I have no time to be a victim so I thought I would use it to blog. Soon I'll be in NYC visiting Frank Thomas (Toronot Blue Jays) and then off to Houston to see Charles Howell III, Mat Goggin and Joe Durant (PGA Golfers). So what's the problem guys? OPF... other people's follow-up. LOL. Yes... thinking on a macro level is the best. Planning then executing. But those loose ends need to be tied up. I'll just be patient. Mmmmm... have I paid these guys? YES! So what's the problem? It must be Spring Break.

What a Week!

From Obama's minister, Hillary and Bill, the Dow, gas prices, Spitzer's hooker, troubled housing market and Iraq, I've had enough for the week. I don't know about you but, I need to clear my head. Where's the AWESOME news? Never before in the history of mankind has so much info arrived so fast from so many sources....CNN, email, text messaging, cell phone, fax, FedEx, network news, Oprah, word-of-mouth....and that was just in the last hour. What am I supposed to do with all of this? How does it make for a better quality of life? What's true and what's not? What are the hidden agendas? What's been left out?

Clear your mind! It's time to be more focused on the thoughts and feelings of your close friends, family and of course...yourself. It's time to control what you can control. This weekend I'm going to be with people I deeply care about. I'm going to watch a movie, take several long walks, workout on my treadmill, laugh as much as I can, go to my favorite restaurant, write on my new book, sleep late, go to yoga and I'm considering buying a puppy. Wow!

Plan your relaxation and enjoyment! Don't wait for it to happen. Make it happen. And eliminate being anal about your discipline and focus. Balance is the key. Have an AWESOME weekend.

National Silence Day

Every month and sometimes twice per month I have a National Silence Day. This is when I turn off my brain and rejuvinate. Less is definitely more on this day. If I need to speak to a client, family member or friend it is at a minimum.

Also, I stay in the moment as much as possible. I DO NOT go into the past on this day. Abraham Lincoln had a famous quote that I abide by..."If you had four hours to chop down a tree, spend two hours sharpening your axe." How cool was Abe! He knew back then that most of us are chopping through our days with a dull axe.

Sssssh....it's National Silence Day. I'm sharpening my axe. Look out tomorrow!

How to avoid burnout in sports, business and life

"I don't want to go to work." "If I talk to another customer I think I'll scream." "Golf is no fun any more." "I dread getting on another plane." These are all real quotes. All were told to me recently. Do you have an arena of your life that has become dull and boring?Do you feel stagnant with a lack of enthusiasm and high energy?Do you approach this life arena with dread? Everyone has been burnt out from over-work in your job or over-practice in your sport. Performing the same routines over and over and over and over and over and over (sorry…that was monotonous) again can get old, fast. During the early 1980's I visited the beautiful country of Ireland. I met with Matt Doyle who was leading his country's tennis federation. We discussed practice routines and the importance to avoid burnout from too much practice. Matt was also coaching a Swedish professional tennis player named Mats Wilander. It was from Doyle and Wilander as coach and player that I first heard the term "cross-train." Wilander began fencing and boxing to improve his hand speed and quickness. Practices became fun and challenging. With a varied practice regimen and a new sense of enthusiasm for training, Wilander swiftly climbed the world rankings until he captured the coveted #1 position. To flip the script on meetings that were boring and non-productive, I led a senior management group while we were in bathing suits in the Caribbean. Yes, eight of us were in waist high water discussing a problem in the automotive business. And when we left the Caribbean we walked onshore with a cost-saving solution to an old problem. I've held seminars at a race car emporium with breaks that consisted of individuals driving 35 mph in Indy car replicas. Check your routines in business, relationships or sports. Vary them. Approach the point of the routine in a new way. What can you add that will spice up your relationships? Try new things. What can you do with your management team that will get them refreshed and re-vitalized? What can you do to add some spark in your practices in golf or tennis? Lastly, I coached a professional golfer that had the talent to win but he couldn't find the practice formula that unleashed his talent. One tournament I demanded that he abandon his old regimens of preparing for his opening round on Thursday. On this particular Tuesday he was to NOT practice after his practice round. And he HAD to go to a concert that night to see Janet Jackson. He was reluctant and wary of the point. On the next night (the night before the tournament) he typically went to bed around 9pm. But NOT this night. He went to see Eric Clapton in concert. His serious approach was forfeited and a fun approach was in its place. Needless to say he won his first PGA tournament that week. He had Janet and Eric to thank for his victory. Avoid burnout. Be aware of this toxic mindset of over-working and over-training with the same approach. Change your routines in life. Add some spice. Delete some tired and worn-out regimens. Add ones that put a smile on your face and a bounce in your step. Enjoy the process. Results will follow.

Empower your relationship in 5 minutes

There are two times in a 24 hour cycle when your subconscious mind naturally is amenable to suggestion. They are right before you sleep and as you awake. Like fertile soil your subconscious mind will readily receive good seeds and bad seeds during these times. When the same seeds of discontent, unhappiness, jealousy, frustration or lack of trust are planted night after night, they will grow into their physical equivalent. Think about being apart and your subconscious mind will figure a way to make it so. Anger, animosity, hatred, loneliness and despair will arrive with negative actions governing your waking hours. Conversely, when the seeds of love, trust, harmony, peace and passion are planted, your relationship will grow into a redwood of unity, prosperity and everlasting love. Remember: your relationship is only as good as what your partner thinks when you're not there. The Five Minute Rule is an insurance policy for keeping those thoughts positive.

Always talk in low pitched tones.
Talk slow and calm. Whispers rock!
Focus on one another in the present tense.
Be honest.
Do NOT bring up other life arenas such as finances, kids, job or personal health.
Avoid ALL talk about the past. It's not the time.
Care about what the other feels, not just thinks. See through their eyes and feel through their feelings. Understand. Compassion spawns passion.
No judgment.
No acting as a victim.
Talk only about the future in a positive, solution oriented and loving way.
Compliment.
Deal from your relationship strengths.
Be silent in harmony and solidarity.
Hold hands, laugh, cuddle, kiss or caress.
Use pet reminders such as, 1+1=3, One breath forever, 'til eternity.
Close the night with statements of "I love you," "I believe in you," "I appreciate you" or other loving, caring "I" statements.

Empower your time

Many of us are so busy that all we worry or think about is the next few moments in front of us. But by having a clear cut vision of the future, the now will effortlessly fall in to place. Using this technique of picturing each piece of a Russian doll as a different portal of your life will really help to actively view goals and desires into managable accomplishments. Read the article that I have written to learn more about how effective this technique can be in setting and following through with goals.

Several years ago I visited Kiev, the capital of the Ukraine. There I gave a seminar to the Ministry of Education. On my day off I had the good fortune to purchase souvenirs called nesting dolls. I brought home eight dolls that fit one inside the other from large to small. The Russian word for nesting doll is Matryoshka. Stemming from the same root as the word mother, matryoshka roughly means little mother. Although nesting dolls have been made in the Far East for many centuries, they were first developed in Russia in the 1890's.
The dolls became very popular and soon become a symbol of Mother Russia (maybe you have some). Each doll is carefully turned on a lathe out of a branch of linden wood, then hand-painted, and lastly, lacquered.
Every doll is unique.
I closed my seminar in Kiev by holding the nesting dolls in front of the audience. I began to discuss my Ukrainian purchase by saying the following:
The largest doll symbolizes your main life vision. It is special. It is large. It is unique. It is the mother of all your actions. See this vision in your mind frequently. Especially before bedtime and just as you awake. This vision should wake you up in the morning and tuck you into bed at night.
The doll just inside of the largest symbolizes your annual goal. It is also special. It is still large, but not as large as the vision doll. It fits comfortably inside the first doll. It is unique. See it, as it will be.
The next doll represents your goal for each quarter of the year (three months). See your first quarter (Jan-March) clearly. It is painted by your hands. It is special. It is not as large as the first two dolls, but it is very important. It is unique.
The fourth doll represents your monthly goal. It is smaller. It is only 30 days. Thirty days can move swiftly from your calendar. It is seen in your mind a minimum of a week before the month begins. It is special. It is unique. See it, as it will be. It fits snug inside the quarter doll.
The fifth doll symbolizes what you want to accomplish during your week. It's only seven days. One week can pass in the blink of an eye. See this in your mind every Sunday night at the latest. "It's one week from now. What do I want to accomplish?" is your thought. It is special. It is unique. See it, as it will be. It fits perfectly inside the monthly doll.
Next is the beautiful doll that reflects one day. It lasts only 24 hours. Gone. Just like that. Oh, what you can pack inside this doll! See tomorrow's accomplishments during the night before. This doll can make a difference in your life and the lives of others. Like a snowflake there are none alike. It is very special. It is very unique.
Next is the doll that symbolizes a singular performance. An encounter with friends, family, associates or prospects....a phone call... meeting...round of golf...tennis match. "When I'm finished what will I have accomplished?" is your thought. See it, as it will be. Each performance is unique. They are stand alones.
Last (but not the least) is the smallest doll of all. Through all of the layers of wood and lacquer it awaits you. The smallest prize. The greatest gift. It is the doll of the moment. A greeting...a friendly handshake...a putt...a hug...an encounter...a serve in tennis...a goodbye...a timeout of silence...an observant eye...an absorbent ear...a spontaneous laugh...a warm smile..."There's no place I'd rather be" is your thought and feeling. This doll is the most special. It is extremely unique. It is magical. Remove this doll and the others disappear.
The nesting dolls. They are your life. You design them to your liking. Each is painted differently. Each belongs inside the other. They fit together. See them, as they will be.

I don't like to waste time with anything I do or coach anyone else to do. Every tool or exercise that I have developed in my coaching is designed for you to use within the time you have between all the activities in your life. 30 seconds here, 3 minutes there. These thought management tools can be used anytime during the day to help with any number of problems. For example, do you spend too much time focusing on your projects at work and not on your loved ones waiting for you at home? Do you not notice the mood your family is in because you have had a long, tough day at work? Is your job taking up your family's time? If you are distant with your family and life at home is unbalanced, then you life and mindset at work cannot be balanced either. Try this tool when you go home from work next to improve your communication. Its called: The 90 Second Rule. If you have been away from people that you care about, such as family and close friends for at least two hours, the first 90 seconds that you see them has more impact than spending hours with them later. The next time you go home after an absence of two or more hours, prepare to give your family and /or friends your undivided attention. 90 seconds. That's all it takes to say with your attentive words and actions, "I love you...I need you...I missed you...I value you...I need you in my life." Immediate, undivided interaction is the best way to convey sincerity and caring to one another. And once you master this at home, it will work just as well with a client. You may have to make that last cell phone call in the drive way or you may need to clear your brain for a few minutes before you walk through the door. Be prepared as you enter a new life arena. The 90 second rule. It works at the office, home or any place where you care about the occupants.
